ACC makes football schedule adjustments as Notre Dame locks up spot in championship game

The ACC announced a series of scheduling changes Tuesday that allowed Notre Dame to clinch a spot in the ACC championship game Dec. 19.

In addition, the ACC has changed its testing procedures, requiring teams to have a PCR test administered on Thursdays so they can receive their results before traveling for games.

Among the scheduling changes to note: Both Notre Dame and Clemson now will have an open date Dec. 12, a week before the ACC championship game in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Irish had been scheduled to play Wake Forest, while the Tigers did not have a game scheduled for that day. Though Florida State wanted to play Clemson on Dec. 12 after their game was postponed, the Tigers did not want to go back to Tallahassee to play. As a result, the ACC decided it would evaluate the three teams in contention for the championship game -- Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami -- on a nine-game conference schedule.

Because the Irish hold all tiebreakers, they secured their spot in the game. Notre Dame, which is playing as an ACC football member for this season only, plays Syracuse on Saturday. If Clemson beats Virginia Tech on Saturday, it would secure its spot in the ACC championship game. If Clemson, Notre Dame or Miami cannot play this weekend, the ACC has the option to reschedule games on Dec. 12, as needed.

ACC is bitchmade. Cancelling a game that only had downsides for NotreDame not cause of covid but cause "reasons"

If Notre Dame gets stomped by Clemson, is there any chance ND gets left out of the playoffs? Not really looking forward to watching ND/Clemson round three.

I guess it's possible; however, somebody would have to jump them (i.e. bump them out of the top 4) so it also depends on how good the potential jumpers look in their Dec 19th game too.

I'm hoping ND stomps Clemson and bumps Dabo out of the playoffs......8D

I'm not rooting for ND.

I am rooting for the delicious theatre of watching the entire Disney media network try to make the case for a 2 loss Clemson to be in the CFP over a 1 loss SEC team.

Assuming tOSU, Bama, and ND all win this week:

It’s hard to justify aTm higher than the 4 spot, and they have to either make ND #1 (not happening) or put aTm above tOSU in order to avoid a 1-vs-4 Bama-aTm rematch in the semifinals. Unless they decide to go with Cincy, Coastal Carolina, an undefeated USC, 1-loss Indiana, or a 2-loss Iowa St/Oklahoma/Clemson.

USC would be (presumably) undefeated P5 champ
2 loss Iowa State/Oklahoma would be a P5 champ with same amount of losses

Undefeated non-P5 teams can forget it

They could also say ND beat Clemson twice so they are #1, Bama 2, OSU 3, A&M 4 but that's a huge stretch

Logically, it should happen. However, when the options at 4 would be either an aggy-bama rematch or letting a G5 crash the party, I think they'll bend over backwards to put ND at 4. It give them the Ohio State-Dabo rematch that everyone wants to see and a blueblood game with bama and the domers. Same dynamic will be in play of Clemson loses a close one.

Personally, I actually would like to see them give it to the juggalos, provided of course that we're in also.

Oh man...can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth if they were to slot Cinci in at 4 and they somehow won it for an all-Ohio CCG? Obviously all but impossible, but quite hilarious to think about.
