Coops rope was so long for 2 reasons imo. Gordon Gee being a true de-emphasize football type of President during the really awful years of Coops reign and the way Earl Bruce was fired. They couldn't fire Coop 4 years into his tenure no matter what, they feared a return to our "graveyard of coaches" reputation and envisioned something similar to what happened to Bama recently.
Also remember Coop didn't have a lot of 3 loss years in his prime stretch...they were always 2 loss seasons. No one could fire a coach with the record Coop amassed between '94 and '98 but once he hit a rough patch in '99 and '00 his ass was gone. I know they cited his loss of control and such but to me it was straight up a case of him finally giving them the excuse they had been looking for.
All this is my opinion, no inside info at all.
