Notable Undrafted Players

He wasn't drafted. Someone sure gave him some "great" advice or he just grossly over estimated his own ability; unless (something like) he was in academic trouble and didn't think that he would be eligible anyway.

WHY wasn't he drafted?? Seems like he had HUGE promise, plus he was an All American?

All-American selection means little to nothing to NFL drafters. Remember that Matt Wilhelm was an AA MLB in 2002, and didn't even get drafted until the second day (6th round?), and hasn't really done anything (yet) in the pros. Shazor didn't do squat in Michigan's two final games, against quality teams.

I think shazor was a all american. Somebody can help me on that. Wow he is a smart one comeing out early. If he stays for his senior year he gets drafted i say in day 2. Considering he wasn't drafted this year.
He was a senior last year. Though he would have had another year of eligibility left as he red-shirted his freshman year. I do not know (in answer to someone ScriptOhio) if he had class-room issues, though that seems unlikely ... perhaps he was simply ready to graduate?
(As being a Heisman winner doesn't get you a passing grade at the NFL draft, Flutie and White being just two examples. So a safety, albeit an All-American safety is no predictor of NFL employment. Its all about their needs and whether you fill them - no-one saw Shazor filling their safety needs, hence he goes un-drafted).

Yeah, Shazor was first team AP All-American this year. Also somewhat of a surprise was T.A. McClendon from N.C. State who came out early and went undrafted.
Compred to Shazor McLendon seems less like a surprise to me. He was heavily injury prone throughout his career at NC State. There were other running backs available -- look at the first round -- with less worries around them.

Playing against "poor quality" teams doesnt seem like a good reason...

After all, DI-AA players get drafted too, and they rarely ever play against "good quality" teams.

Shazor was a gamer. And come on, 007, you know 40 numbers dont tell the whole story.

The NFL is all about measurables. Staying another year would not have made Shazor faster. If you go to the combines they know what your potential is and if you have it you will at least be a late round pick.

His extra year might have made the difference between free agent try out and 6th round pick - but not much more than that.

If he didn't sign with an agent (although I'm sure he did) would he be permitted to return to scUM?

I know this is true in basketball but not sure about FB

A few other notables who didn't get selected

Jason White (OU)
Timmy Chang (Hawaii)
Bryan Randall (VT) ....a good comparison to Troy Smith I think
