North Carolina Tar Heels (official thread)

:slappy: This is classic. NC's take on LSU player look a likes.

Rumor has it that nine or so heels were moved to the practice squad because of the NCAA investigation. If true, what a cluster-[censored] right before the game with the Tiggers. :shake:

I think people are forgetting the fact that every single year some ACC squad is supposedly loaded. And then they take 2-3 weeks to prve all these blowhards are simply schmucks.

Carry on UNC. With or without your full compliment of players. You will still be slightly better than average. Nobody knows how to win in that conference...yet everyone knows how to blow a team way out of proportion.

I'm trying to figure out why you typed the last 6 words.

Not sure what you're referring to, but I cannot recall any violations at Miami under Davis nor could I find any while searching. Now, there were several under Erickson that Davis inherited, but nothing that points to Davis. Is there something I'm missing?

The only thing i can think of was when he first got to Miami. He suspended a LB for two games after he got arrested. Then the whole Jammi German thing where he attacked a track player for calling him a homo. I think he got suspended for the whole season for it.

I just hope Shannon figures out how to beat Butch this year. :(

I ran into one of my former teammates tonight at a HS game, he's a walk-on at UNC (He's transferring to Western Carolina in the winter since they are giving him a full ride), and talked to him about this whole thing.

The nanny wasn't the only one doing this... he was in the study hall where plenty of tutors were doing it, hell he said he got some "help" too. Said probably around 30 players are involved... pretty much the entire starting defense.

The homer local ESPN guys out of Raleigh that I am forced to listen to on a daily basis on my drive are having conniptions over this. Their main bent is the academic standards that UNC stands for and how this will have a significant impact on them, because after all this is not an SEC school.

According to them Butch = Dead Man Walking......

UNC suspends Marvin Austin indefinitely; DT won't play in opener | CollegeFootballTalk.com

A shoe has finally dropped in the situation swirling around Marvin Austin, although it's not exactly the shoe most had expected.

According to a press release issued by North Carolina, the defensive tackle has been suspended indefinitely. However, the school states -- apparently with a straight face and everything -- that the suspension is unrelated to the NCAA investigation that has cast a pall over the school for the past two months or so.

Here, we'll let head coach Butch Davis explain.

"This decision is not a result of the ongoing NCAA review," Davis said in a statement. "Marvin has violated team rules and has neglected his responsibilities to the team."

The release concluded with the note that Austin will not play in the opener Saturday against LSU.

The senior has been at the center of a NCAA probe stemming from his alleged relationship with an agent and several trips he took in the offseason. It's also believed he's part of a new prong to the NCAA's investigation involving academics.

John Blake has resigned his position as DL/associate head coach/recruiting coordinator at UNC.

Blake is a successful recruiter who helped bring in and develop UNC's talented D-line. He was also the head coach at Oklahoma just before Bob Stoops, going 3-8, 4-8 and 5-6 from '96 to '98.

Speculation is that Blake's invovlement with agent Gary Wichard is what's behind this.

Amid probe, UNC assistant coach Blake resigns

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- John Blake has resigned his position on North Carolina's football staff, effective immediately, school officials said Sunday night.

Blake, who was in his fourth season working with Butch Davis, said in a statement issued by the school that he stepped down because "my presence has become a distraction" to the university.

"Consequently, I have determined that it is in the best interests of my family, the university community at large, and the football program for me to step down from my position as associate head football coach," Blake said.

The NCAA has spent much of the summer investigating whether defensive lineman Marvin Austin and receiver Greg Little received improper benefits from agents.

Fall guy?

UNC is surely taking the step to show the NCAA they're taking steps to correct their problems, and they might be crossing their fingers that the mess won't get much worse.

Anybody following Blake's career closely wouldn't be very shocked at him being involved in something that ends up being a problem. He was tight with Barry Switzer, and has also worked for Jackie Sherrill.

NCAA suspends UNC's Burney, Williams for taking benefits

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The NCAA suspended North Carolina defensive back Kendric Burney six games and safety Deunta Williams four games on Wednesday for receiving improper benefits.

Both players must also repay benefits to become eligible, though the school plans to appeal the length of the suspensions.

In a news release, the NCAA said Burney received $1,333 in benefits while Williams received $1,426 in benefits. The school said Burney must repay $575.19 and Williams must repay $450.67 to charities of their choice.
