again, just because someone can recreate a pollock doesn't mean that anyone can do it. works by virtually any painter can be so well recreated that the differences would be almost unnoticeable. it's not as though art buyers haven't been swindled before by non-pollock decoys.

One thing that make a collectible item desireable is the value it holds as a historical artifact.

A simple example that some of us can relate to more readily is the replica jersey versus a real one. An actual game jersey worn by Archie Griffin, complete with grass stains from the Rose Bowl is considerably more valuable than a replica jersey purchased from Buckeye Corner. The replica might even be made of better material, be more durable, have dyes that are more color-fast, and it isn't pre-stained. :tongue2:

However, the collector buys the original jersey because it connects him or her to a moment, a person, or an event with which they'd like to be associated, and which has meaning to them.

If you admire Pollock and his work, and feel a connection to his biography, then owning one of his paintings has meaning to you.

Another example would be the difference between owning a Shebly 427 Cobra which was raced at Le Mans versus owning a replica build by Superformance. The Superformance is actually a better car than the original, yet will never generate the emotional response that the original does.

Now, to someone who cares not a whit for football or cars, Archie's jersey and the Shelby are just old, dirty things that no one should want or care to want. For someone who finds meaning in football or auto racing, they're extremely valuable.

If we all appreciated the same stuff as "art" and all thought the same things were equally appealing & brilliant as "art"...we'd all be robots...which some people (namely my uncle Shawn & Stepdad) would love to see. Some people...predominantly the super alpha male (these 2) do not like any change and do not appreciate any individuality at all. That's what makes art interesting. Uniqueness & all the f'ed up mentalities that have contributed to the world of art as we know it...whether it be music, painting...etc.etc...

Good times.
