No. 1 Ohio State--78, #16 Central Connecticut--57 (Game Thread)

three ccsu players shoot an average of 20 3-pointers each game. these three are decent shooters, succeeding on 39% of their attempts. given ohio state's inside defensive presence and ccsu's complete lack of height, i'd look for the blue devils to play slow basketball that is almost completely dependent on their outside scoring ability. defensively, they have no match for oden, hunter, and even twiggy. if the bucks shoot more than 6 3-pointers by the time they should be 20 points ahead, i'll be disappointed. thursday should be an excellent opportunity for hunter to tap into his offensive arsenal. moreover, i hope that we see cook regain his confidence while facing lesser opposition.

Central Connecticut faces a tall order in Ohio State

By Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff | March 12, 2007
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- How would you like to be Central Connecticut State University center Jemino Sobers?

The senior from Scarborough, Ontario, can barely practice. He has shaken off shin splints and a stress fracture in his left leg to help the short handed Blue Devils earn the school's third trip to the NCAA Tournament. His reward is a matchup with Ohio State big man and projected NBA No. 1 pick Greg Oden.
Sobers and his teammates face a tall task in the first round. The 16th-seeded Blue Devils are headed to Lexington, Ky., to face South Region No. 1 seed Ohio State Thursday.

I said last week that if the Blue Devils were successful in the NEC tourney, they would win their first round game in the NCAAs. I have seen nothing to change that assessment.

This CSU team has done just about everything else that we said could not be done. One more win, even against Ohio State, is not really that much more of a stretch.

The sports world is long overdue for another such upset. And I firmly believe that this Blue Devil team is going to give it to us, by becoming the first 16th seed to defeat a number one seed.

...

This is, of course, merely a hunch. A forecast plotted quite unscientifically by the heart, with little or no assistance from the brain. But that is how these things always begin to take form. And when you are talking about a Blue Devil team that leads the nation in heart, it actually makes sense.

That is why Thursday?s game will be one for the ages.

CSU 72 OSU 68
such fanciful, wide-eyed optimism is rather refreshing.

I've never heard of this school in my life...???

I believe OSU played them once (maybe twice) in the 90's. Perhaps when Keith Closs was still playing there.

EDIT - beat them 79-52 on Nov. 26, 1995. Freshman Jermaine Tate had 26 points, 11 assists, and 13 rebounds.

just a reminder to sign up for vip access at cbssportsline.com that way you can watch our game uninterupted. being a 1v16 i'm guessing we won't get too much tv coverage

That's a good call. We are playing at the same time as MSU vs. Marquette, so I'm sure that it's either online or directv if you want to watch outside of Ohio.

To the thread that was closed. CCSU has won 2 of the last 3 NEC football championships. Our Running back led DI-AA in rushing this yr.

Maybe I'm missing something. I don't see how that's relevant. But whatever.

As I've said before, I notice that Ohio State >just< beats their opponents. Sure, they whooped on Wisconsin at the end. But they let Penn State take a last-second shot to tie, and games against Michigan were close. Maybe CCSU can keep the score close.

I'm not worried that Ohio State can't win the game. But 22 points seems too high to me. However, as I said in the vbet thread, I'm all in on the Buckeyes to cover. But mostly because I haven't vbet on anything since the national championship game, and I wanted to bet on something. And I can't bet against Ohio State.

No. 1 seed: Buckeyes a (young) two-headed monster

There's an axiom in college basketball about the value of veteran leadership in the NCAA Tournament: The more experienced the team, the better. Everyone says so.
Everyone, meet Greg Oden.
That axiom is true up to the point where the best player on the court stands 7-feet-1, weighs 280 pounds and moves like a cheetah. When that happens, whether that 7-1, 280-pound cheetah is a freshman or senior is absolutely irrelevant.

I think 22 is more than fair - we have had trouble defending the 3 at times this year. With little inside presence, that will become easier, but Nitzel showed that we could struggle against good 3 point shooters. No way should they slow us down on offense with Oden and Hunter.

On a separate note, we really need Cook to get off the schneid. I don't know how long the game was stuck on 10-4 yesterday, but we had a chance to really put it away early with they way the D was playing, but Cook really struggled during that period (though he did hit a big 3 in the 2nd half). His offense will be key to our success in the tourney if. Go Bucks!

:oh: :io:

Hopefully the bucks come out and just put the hammer down in this game. They need to start the tourney off with a statement if they hope to make the final four. Get ready to see every team we play trying to put Oden in foul trouble :(
