NIU IN THE ORANGE BOWL!!!!

Would it have mattered which game? I mean, sure the payout is a bit better in the Cotton, but you're still going to play almost a de-facto home game in Atlanta

more of the principle of it and the matchup.
we literally fell to absolute worst bowl we could have.

beating Texas' ass in Jerry World on a night when we the only game on is more enticing than playing Clemson on New Year's Eve.

also thought Outback should have matched us with scUM.

us and Michigan have the most combined wins of any 2 teams that have never played each other.
then throw in the Miles/Michigan angle.
and oh yeah, we beat Carolina, are ranked higher than Carolina, travel better than Carolina, draw bigger TV ratings than Carolina.
plus we haven't played that bowl since the 80s.
Carolina might as well make it a branch campus since they never qualify for a bigger bowl than that one.

The situation is interesting to watch.

First, the problem isn't with NIU, it's the BCS idiots who created the rule that qualifies a top-16 non-AQ school when an AQ conference champion is ranked below them. That just allows 2 weak teams into the BCS in those years, and I never saw the logic in that rule, but it was put in to quiet down the little guys a few years ago.

I heard from some sports radio show (don't remember which one) that it was to appease the smaller schools regarding anti-trust laws.

I didn't even think about that lawsuit. But you are possibly on to something. KH has possibly opened up a can of worms with his insistence on the firing of the Torg. Torg has nothing to lose now that he's gone and he may know a thing or two about Kirk that Kirk doesn't want to get out.

I don't wish Kirk any more harm than he has inflicted on others. He got Torg fired so it would be really ironic if Torg was able to get Kirk fired.

And don't forget that Frosted Tips' favorite non-BCS squad was and will always be Boysee state. If Boysee was 16th you know all we would hear about is how they have a shot since they beat Oklahoma and blah blah blah.

Maybe it was me, but Tips' rant struck me as being very stressed-laden. Maybe the discovery phase of that idiot's lawsuit against him has caused Herbie to put a few bodies in the Cumberland or something :paranoid:

Yeah, they had to throw them a bone, but they could have made it more logical, something like the highest-ranked non-AQ in the top-8 will always get a spot - that way at least it might be a more compelling matchup, and it wouldn't have put 2 weak teams into the BCS in the same year.

I think this is awesome, because the TV networks hate it and LSU, Georgia, and Oklahoma were left out. The only way it could get better is if they pull off the upset.

Go Huskies!

In 2007, Georgia was the beneficiary of a system that put us in the Sugar Bowl when UT lost in the SEC Championship to LSU.

Florida is benefiting in the exact same way this year and we're headed to Orlando on NYD. What's good for the goose is good for the gander I guess...

And I'm going to pull for Florida State. If NIU wins the cries to expand the playoff to 8 and 12 teams will be deafening. I don't begrudge the Huskies, just the playoff expansionists

Hell, in 2001, we played for a national championship (and got run) against the fighting Shapiros. Even after not playing for the conference championship. And getting throttled against Ralphie that year (beginning of the end).

But I think 8 teams is better than 4 because I don't think any conference should get more than 1 team in until all teams have at least had a shot.....and every conference that has 16 teams and a CCG should get an automatic qualifier.

there are roughly 120 Division 1 programs.....if you require 16 teams to get in then that is 7 conferences plus a few leftover. Let's say there can be 7 conference champions plus 1 at-large from all other teams combined regardless of affiliation. This won't be an automatic shoe-in for ND as the lone independent. They would have to be ranked higher than the highest ranked 2nd place finisher from a conference plus can't have lost to that team during the season.

play round 1 games at the home site of the conference champion with the higher rating...the at-large has no home game. Then the Final Four is played in place of the BCS bowls. Round 1 is to be held at least 2 weeks after the CCGs....giving time for a sellout crowd.

Conferences create championship games, then the BCS punishes teams for losing them while rewarding teams who didn't even reach them. Last year was the latest example, but as noted here by no means the first.

Yeah, these fucking guys have a great system. :roll2:

at least USCe management knows who they are. they gave Darth Visor a contract extension for placing 3rd in the SEC East.

Would NIU be in if Ohio State were eligible?

Yes. If tOSU had defeated Nebraska in the CCG, only the Rose Bowl would be different. If Nebraska had defeated tOSU in the CCG, then NIU would probably still be in the BCS (at #16 rather than #15), and the Fiesta would have had a choice between 1-loss Oregon and 1-loss tOSU, but the Sugar then would have had the same chioce between Louisville and NIU, with the Orange Bowl forced to take the team that the Sugar passed on. The Sugar and Orange couldn't take anybody except NIU/Louisville after the Fiesta chose an at-large, because NIU and Louisville were guaranteed spots somewhere in the BCS as automatic qualifiers.
