NIT Final Four (semi-final): Ohio State 81, Ole Miss 69 (Final)

Buckeyes in the Garden

I received an e-mail today from an Ohio State alumnus who told me that the OSU alumni clubs of New Jersey, New York City and Philadelphia will have 83 members sitting in sections 110 and 111 Tuesday night when the Buckeyes play Mississippi in an NIT semifinal.
So if you?re going to the game and would rather fraternize with Buckeyes than Rebels, Gators or Minutemen (or wise guys), that?s a place to look for seats if they?re still available. You can buy them at thegarden.com, ticketron.com, by calling Ticketmaster at 212-307-7171, or at the Garden box office at 7th Avenue and 32nd Street.

OXFORD - The pain of denial has been replaced with the excitement of a new opportunity.

Refocusing to play in the NIT is never an easy thing, but both Ole Miss and Ohio State have managed to do just that as they prepare to meet in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night.

The Rebels have shot 49 percent or better in three straight NIT wins. Guards Chris Warren and David Huertas have combined to shoot 48.8 percent from 3-point range during that time.

While Ole Miss (24-10) has gotten increased production from some of its regulars, it's gotten timely play from reserves as well with defense from Rodney Jones against Cal-Santa Barbara and offense from Zach Graham in overtime against Nebraska.

There's been a sharp mental edge as the Rebels have now won six of their last seven.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Two weeks ago, the disappointment of not making the NCAA Tournament still fresh, Ohio State coach Thad Matta was asked whether he would rather lose the first weekend of the NCAA than win the National Invitation Tournament in New York.
Matta, who has been in the NCAA Tournament 11 times as an assistant or head coach, did not hesitate. The former, he said.
Reminded of that last week, he smiled.
"Now I'm glad (we're going to) New York," Matta said.
It's not lip service.
Matta and his players say they have enjoyed extending their season longer than they probably would have in the NCAA Tournament, which plays its Final Four this weekend in San Antonio.

NEW YORK - If possession is nine-tenths of the law, it must work that way with winning basketball too.

It has in the NIT at least.

Ole Miss (24-10) has outrebounded three NIT opponents by an average of 14 boards a game. The Rebels hope their presence on the glass will help lift them past Ohio State (22-13) in tonight's semifinal meeting.

Tipoff will be sometime after 8 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

The Ole Miss-Ohio State winner will face the winner of tonight's first semifinal, either UMass or Florida, in Thursday's championship game.

Ole Miss dominated Virginia Tech on the boards, 46-23, in an 81-72 win against the Hokies in Blacksburg on Wednesday.
