Figured we might as well just have one generic thread, instead of bouncing around from one created each season over & over. It should have a home of it's own.

Anywho, Boston & Chicago it is for the Stanley Cup. First ever Stanley Cup Finals meeting between both teams & first Original Six meeting in Stanley Cup Finals since '79. Should be a great series.

The Dallas Stars signed veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a two-year, $10 million contract on Saturday, one day after acquiring the rights to the 39-year-old Russian from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Not sure giving a 39-year-old on the last legs of his career guy like Gonchar is going to do to help them, but I guess it's a step in the right direction. $5 mil a year to this guy is criminal. He's still a good player, but nothing like the Sergei Gonchar of old.

Glad you created this threat because I've had something in my head the past week or so. As a casual sports fan it's nice having something to watch every night with the NHL and NBA alternating their games, but the only reason I'm even watching the finals is because the Ohioan in me wants to see Lebron lose, and there's nothing else on (shut my cable off until fall).

Anyway, I wonder if the NHL would have anything to gain by putting their product directly against the NBA. I know a lot of people bitch about the product that the NBA puts on the floor and Darth Stern. If the NHL put together a marketing campaign that's a montage of alternating clips of NHL hits vs. NBA flops and guys whining about calls it seems like that would appeal to the casual American sports fan who may just be watching the NBA because it's what ESPN is covering.

From a business perspective without having any formal marketing intel my guess would be you would most likely be wasting resources marketing to people who aren't your customer.

Meaning you aren't going to get a lot of NBA to NHL conversions as they are two pretty distinct market segments/demographics. Sure there could be some but probably not enough to launch a major marketing campaign over.

I think the NBA ran off that big group of people who could actually enjoy both a long time ago.

That was my guess as well. I figure people at NHL have looked at it and decided that they get the fans they want without competing w/ the NBA. I have nothing to support this, and ESPN will prove me wrong, but hockey seems like a more watchable sport both live and on TV, and I'm about as casual of a fan as there is. The NBA is just garbage (5 steps without dribbling, flopping, whining). It's too bad they shoot themselves in the foot with a lockout every few years.

Vincent Lecavlier agrees to terms with Philadelphia Flyers - NHL.com

Center Vincent Lecavalier, bought out by the Tampa Bay Lightning last week, has agreed to a multiyear contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, the team announced Tuesday.


Tim Panaccio of CSN Philadelphia and Darren Dreger of TSN report the contract is for five years and $22.5 million, an average annual value of $4.5 million. ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports the contract includes a no-movement clause.

He got it twice because the voters didn't realize he played RW all year. So a bunch of other retards voted him for a position he didn't play.

The president of the PHWA (they vote for this award) said this:

Prior to ballots being issued, we emailed a memo to our members reminding them of Ovechkin?s position switch in 2012-13. But 45 of our members chose to vote for him on the left wing, the position he had played for many years. It is also the position listed for him on NHL.com.

We are troubled by the all-star voting results, and plan to take a closer look at the events that led to Ovechkin winning All-Star acclaim at two positions. We know we got this wrong, and our objective is to make sure it never happens again.

Boston basically traded Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley to the Stars for Loui Eriksson.

Boston wins this trade right now. Dallas maybe down the road. Seguin has the potential to be really good, but he isn't yet. Eriksson is a fantastic player and he'll be in the spotlight now. I've always been an Eriksson fan. I think he could hit point-per-game totals in Boston depending on his linemates. Boston still needs to shed some salary. That team is going to be a lot different next year. They're losing Seguin, Horton, Jagr, Peverley and probably a d-man like Boychuk for salary reasons.
