Safety Adam Archuleta kept getting calls from his former Rams defensive coordinator, Lovie Smith, who was trying to recruit him to come to the Chicago Bears and help out his defense.

But the Redskins flashed $10 million in guarantees and a contract worth close to $5 million a year, and those thoughts ended. Archuleta became the Redskins' fourth addition from over the weekend, joining receivers Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El and tight end Christian Fauria.

Archuleta flew to Washington on Saturday on Daniel Snyder's private plane and stayed for the weekend until the Redskins finished the deal. John Clayton is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com

The office of Lewis' agent, Mitch Frankel, confirmed Lewis accepted a three-year deal to stay in Baltimore. Terms of the deal were unavailable because Frankel was on a flight this morning.

Lewis was planning to go to Denver for a visit and start to find another team but he kept in touch with the Ravens. Finally, after 24 hours of negotiations, going back and forth between short-term and long-term deals, Lewis accepted a three-year deal to stay and will have a conference call with the media later this afternoon.

This isn't free agent news but I didn't think it needed its own thread:

The Dolphins decided to stop waiting for Chargers quarterback Drew Brees to lower his contract demands and opted to give the Vikings a second-round choice to acquire quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

Culpepper had been talking to the Dolphins for the past week, expressing his desire to be with the Dolphins along with showing a willingness to rework his contract to fit into the Dolphins salary cap. Contract talks between the Dolphins and Brees have been stalled because the Saints had more money and more guarantees on the table from the Saints.

Vikings coach Brad Childress said recently Culpepper is on schedule in his rehab from surgery in which he tore three knee ligaments after having a trainer fly to Florida to meet with Culpepper. The recovery time from such major surgery is 12 months, but Culpepper has told the Dolphins that he's ahead of schedule and may be able to play before September.

Finding a quarterback this offseason was Nick Saban's main objective. Though he liked Brees, he was unwilling to give him $10 million in guarantees after he is coming off shoulder surgery.

Culpepper's trade clears the stage for the Saints to get Brees.

So if the Saints get Brees what happens to the draft order? They sure as hell aren't going to take a QB if they give Brees a big contract. I could see Vince Young falling several picks from this.

I think the Saints take Ferguson and Leinart falls to the Titans at #3. The Jets already resigned Pennington and they're making a run at Ramsey. If they land Ramsey too I think Young falls down to the Raiders at #7.

Well my scenario may play out although they mention Mario Williams as the target here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2368304

Early in his career, there were questions about Drew Brees having a slow release.

That wasn't the case Tuesday when he pulled the trigger on a six-year, $60 million deal with the New Orleans Saints that included a $10 million signing bonus.
Brees' decision came within seconds of the Dolphins dropping out of the bidding when they traded a second-round choice for Daunte Culpepper. All along, the Saints had more money and more guarantees on the table for Brees and wanted to use his name as the marquee for ticket sales, sales that have been hot because of the Saints' return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Even though the Saints will be looking at Matt Leinart in the draft, they have Brees as their starting quarterback. That puts the Saints in the position to possible trade down from the No. 2 spot and take defensive end Mario Williams or simply take the North Carolina State defensive end.

Brees comes to New Orleans with high recommendations. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells has always been a big fan of Brees and advised his former assistant, Sean Payton, to take Brees if he had the chance. Payton is the new coach of the Saints.

Brees rejected the Dolphins' idea of lowering his demands for guarantees because the Saints made a promise to his agent, Tom Condon. In the end, Brees didn't budge and he ended up going to the Saints.

I bet Norm Chow is the happiest man in Tennessee right now.

I'm a Titans fan, and I saw we signed David Givens, and he'll be a nice number two WR.

I saw that the Saints signed Brees, so they obviously won't draft Young or Leinart.

So, my question is:

Do you think that Norm Chow wants Matt Leinart or Vince Young?

I'd assume that he'd want Leinart, since he coached him and all, but I was wondering why you think he's the happiest man in Tennessee right now?

Haha, sorry, I'm completely clueless.
