What they called and what was happening probably are different. Watching the replay the ball was still moving and he gained possession of it as he was going out of bounds before he got two feet in.

I didn't see it that way honestly. He's allowed to complete the catch later in the process. To me the question is what does going to ground mean. I think generally because the defender was engaged the whole time they got it right but its not a clear thing
