NFL Discussion (Official Thread)

Colts dump Reich. I was always curious as to what hand he had in bringing in the washed QBs that seemed to cycle through there in his tenure. @OHSportsFan any insight?

I don't have any insight other than what I've picked up from Rich Eisen/Dan Patrick interviews with the NFL insiders, but from what I have gathered, Jim Irsay is about as hands-on as it gets with the QB situation.

I know the Colts were blindsided by Luck's retirement and that's a tough break, but they've made no effort to find a viable QB of the future (spoiler: Sam Ehlinger ain't it), opting to bounce from retread-to-retread-to-retread. That's a fail.
I mean, Ryan should have been at least serviceable. You have to think even with a less than stellar crop of receivers that the play action game with Taylor should have had some success. But it is not. Taylor himself has been a bust this season and they just traded their second back away in Hines. Head scratching all the way around over there.

Reich was given a pretty poor roster - namely QB. Leaders seemed intent on finding the nice guy, established vet instead of investing in quality through FA or the draft. Wentz was a fail for whatever reason. Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan were always going to be a disaster. They would have been better off swinging for Mariotta or Jimmy G or heck even Goff the last couple offseasons.

GM Ballard is next one out. He tried to play it safe and has lots of misses. Thinks he’s the smartest guy and could get by without a franchise QB (or WRs for that matter).

Team was definitely quiet quitting on Reich at this point too.

LOL at Jeff Saturday though. Already got Reggie Wayne at WR coach. May as well bring back the 2006 squad. Where’s Bob Sanders and Edgering to coach??

2019 - Andrew Luck retires
2020 - Draft picks of WR Michael Pittman (2.2), RB Jonathan Taylor (2.9)
2021 - Draft picks of DE Kwity Paye (lol) (1.21), DE Dayo Odeyingbo, (2.22)
2022 - Draft picks of WR Alec Pierce (2.21), TE Jelani Woods (3.9), OT Bernhard Raimann (3.13), S Nick Cross (3.32)

2020 was a top heavy QB class with Burrow, Tua, and Justin Herbert all going before Indy had a chance to get them. They passed on Jalen Hurts in the 2nd for the super stars at WR and RB. I'm not mad at this.
2021 was a super deep QB class with Lawrence, Wilson, Lance, Fields, and Jones. They stood still at 21 and missed on all of them.
2022 was a dud QB class.

With the benefit of hindsight (kinda...it's still 2022, but those QBs are ass), it looks like they definitely should've made a move up in 2021 for a QB. Or maybe the move is for a 2023 QB. If they could've paired Michael Pittman and Jonathan Taylor with Justin Fields the following year, though......

Irsay said a lot of really stupid shit in his presser, and I think the Colts are going to be dogshit until he dies or sells. He mentioned Al Davis as his biggest influence. And he’s making it clear that he’s running the show.

I like how he said they’re the fourth winningest team since he took over. Yeah, because of Peyton Manning, not because of you. The Colts should have won multiple rings with Peyton…

Imagine where they'd be if they hadn't followed Peyton with Andrew Luck...
