All of these nuanced player protection, what is a catch and PI rules have changed. The fact the NFL and CFB refs are still middle aged weekend warriors has not.

MLB,otoh, uses full time umpires who replay has proven to be exceptional at everything except balls and strikes which they are working to remove humans from.

so, no, IMO, it isn’t just because social media amplifies the outrage.
It still boggles my mind that multi-million dollar industries like the NFL and the NCAA put people in positions that make/break teams' seasons and can impact players' bonuses on a part-time basis.

simple. The organization’s revenue isn’t impacted by the outcomes of individual games

unless it ever gets to the point they lose ticket sales, tv eyeballs or merchandise sales because of it you can expect more of the same.
