Wish list in works for next OSU chief
Attendance dismal at first public forum

Does anyone really care who the next president of Ohio State University will be?

Not many, judging from the sparse turnout today at a public forum where anyone could tell the presidential search committee what kind of leader the school needs.

The Wexner Center for the Arts auditorium where the forum was held looked as empty as a midday movie showing. Nine people spoke.

The committee's draft list of the qualifications needed says it wants a consensus-builder who leads "by example rather than fiat"; a skilled communicator who is articulate, persuasive, diplomatic and "extraordinarily engaging"; and a leader who will solicit and listen to the needs of others and operate openly inside and outside the university.

personally i say take a risk, go get yourself someone who has high level corporate experience. but will the "do something great" or do something that is layup, i bet its a layup choice

Why "high level corporate" experience. I can never understand those people who are always harping for universities to run more like business. Should we rush out and get some overpriced Jack Welch disciple like the clown that was just ousted at Home Depot?

Last time I checked, the American system of higher education was the overwhelmingly dominant such system in the world--still the gold standard despite the economic and social advances made overseas in the last half century. American business? Uhh, not so much.

My guess is that Wexner and Ong will choose someone with policies and philosophies exactly like those of Karen Holbrook but with much better people skills. We do have a 2 billion dollar fundraising campaign starting next year.

Joe Alutto, Dean of the Fisher College of Business, was shortlisted recently as the new president of Michigan State, which he declined if I recall correctly. He is a world-respected HR prof whose research focused on strategy. He bleeds Ohio State and would be an excellent new President of the University.

Alutto sounds like a strong candidate. I wonder if coming from the inside, hurts his chances? Often, they like to bring in a new president from outside the community to offer a fresh perspective.

In this case, however, I think an internal choice might be better. The university is on a roll, so we're not looking for anyone to change direction in terms of policies or philosophies, and Alutto is well plugged into our primary fundraising channels, which would allow him to hit the ground running when the campaign starts.

I listened to an interview with Karen yesterday I think on 10 tv. I have a big vocabulary, that nutball used a word I think she just made up.

I stopped using big words to impress people about 5-8 years ago yet this dingleberry has the Grim Reaper chasing her and she's still bloviating about her blimp size intellect.

I don't give a shit who's ass they put in tht seat, just so they let us drink while tailgating!:drunks:

I loved the Dispatch article that showed that we were the only Big Ten university that doesn't allow drinking at private tailgates, but we have the most game day problems. What more does one need to know that those problems are not the result of some 50 year old alumnus having a beer at a private tailgate? Holbrook wanted to look like she was doing something without having the balls to take on the real problem on the other side of Lane Avenue.

Also, with Hope Taft leaving the Governor's Mansion, I'd expect the over-zealous liquor control enforcement around the state to back off somewhat.

Crap in one hand and wish for this in the other and tell me which one gets filled first

It can't get any worse. Hope Taft purged all of the old-school officials from the Division of Liquor Control and replaced them with her hand-picked group of religious zealots. There is a huge amount of pressure from some influential business interests to back off the craziness. When Taft was Governor, the discussions went nowhere because Gov. Milquetoast couldn't stand up to his nutjob wife.

Change is going to come. It won't come overnight, but it will happen.

It was bad when I was in school during the 90's. Even had some cops infiltrate our porch and flash his badge and want to see ID's of those drinking.

My favorite story was the two liquor control agents who were "staking out" a Columbus bar from a private parking lot in an unmarked car. The attendant came over and told them to pay the parking fee. Without identifying themselves, they pulled a gun on him, cuffed him and put him in the backseat for a ride. They released him in an alley a mile away. The poor guy thought that he was taken to be killed. Not even Hope Taft could save the jobs of those two nutcases.

In another case, this time in Dayton, Ohio liquor control agents committed identity theft of some girl who had her ID confiscated. They set up an unvercover stripper with the poor college girl's name and social security number.

Those are the kinds of abuses you'll have when you hire a bunch of Highway Patrol Academy rejects and send them out after telling them that they're doing "God's work."
