Young Buck

Junior
Hey everyone! I believe I am the freshest Buckeye here, having accepted admission to OSU as an MBA yesterday. So, of course, the first and most important subject I need to educate myself in is Buckeye football!

If you gurus would be so kind, can I get a crash course in Buckeye football or links to good articles to begin to familiarize myself with the team? Also, what would be the best games from previous seasons to do film study on so I can learn the style and schemes of the team?

I already hate Michigan so I hope I'm off to a good start! :tongue2:

During Michigan week, begin each and every statement with "Fuck Michigan"

Remember that even though Bo was Woody's biggest rival, he WAS A BUCKEYE

DickRod is quickly ruining the reputation of the program.

JoePa is older than dirt.

Beanie Wells possesses the stiff-arm of justice and righteousness.

Actually, you're off to a GREAT Start! Nice post.

My best advice to you would be similar to telling a guy who's thinking of becoming a drunk to visiting a liquor store. First off, learn as much as you can about Coach Woody Hayes. Books like "The 100-Yard War" and "You Win With People" are classic reads. Google around for more articles and pieces about Coach Hayes and his humanitarianism in terms of his relationships with his players, as well as his "behind the scenes" acts. If you ever thought of Coach Hayes as some crazy-ass who punched an opposing player, you'll be shamed when you actually find out that he was the most caring and passionate figure that ever graced THE Ohio State University in any respect.

Also, check-out a copy of Jack Park's Encyclopedia. It's a must have for any Buckeye fan who's into the history of the program.

As far as past games and "film study" I'd kinda forget about that. And "schemes" change from year to year, so drop that one also. You'll pick up more useful info from the countless great posters "here" than you will anywhere else.

As you educate yourself about the program, it will start to make sense. There are just way too many huge games, great wins, devastating losses to mention. 34 years between our last 2 national Championships pretty much says it all. WE are the greatest fans of the Greatest football program in the country, now YOU are as well. Plus, you picked the best possible site on the internet to learn from as well.

Welcome aboard, Young Buck, and hope to see you here for quite awhile.

Peace.

Always take a few minutes to read about what's current in the Football Forum, and never be afraid to ask anything from anyone.

Congratulations on getting accepted to OSU grad school. I hope you enjoy your time in Columbus (it shouldn't be too difficult). If you want to get familiar with Buckeye Football lore, there is plenty of info on the official school website, in addition to many other Buckeye websites: O-zone, 11W, bucknuts, OurHonorDefend, etc. A few names you should be aware of: Alexander Lilly, Chic Harley, Francis Schmidt, Paul Brown, Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Howard Cassady, Woody Hayes, Archie Griffin, Earle Bruce, Eddie George, Troy Smith (that's just for starters). Also great players such as Bill Willis, Jim Parker, Jack Tatum, Chris Spielman, the list goes on and on.

What you need to get hip to right away is that Ohio State Football is not just about wins and losses, national championships, all-americans, Heisman Trophy winners, or what have you. The tradition of Ohio State Football is built on the idea that the sport of football is a means to develop young men in to outstanding members of society. You need look no further than our own Archie Griffin, who was perhaps the greatest college football player of his time, but has eclipsed his achievements on the playing field with all he's done since then in his work to benefit the football program, the university, and the community. That spirit has been a part of Ohio State long before most of us were born, and it is stronger than ever right now.

James Patrick Tressel is first and foremost an educator and mentor, and then a football coach. The success of the football team is a byproduct of his commitment to teaching his players to be the best people that they can be. It's too involved to explain in a short post. There is a tradition of excellence that was started long before Coach Tressel came to Columbus, and even before Coach Hayes. The true measure of The Ohio State Football Program is not in what happens on the field, but what it's players contribute to society after their time in Columbus is done. That's not to say that winning fooball games isn't awesome, and you will see much of that in the next few years, but Ohio State's legacy is best expressed in a couple of quotes by two of it's greatest figures: Coach Tressel, "It's not about football", and Coach Hayes, "You win with people".
