New York Jets (official thread)

Source: Jets continue overhaul, releasing WR Davante Adams

Three weeks after parting with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets are releasing his favorite wide receiver, Davante Adams, a source told ESPN on Tuesday.

The Jets also have given permission to wide receiver Allen Lazard -- another Rodgers favorite -- to seek a trade before the start of the league year on March 12, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. In all likelihood, he, too, will end up being released.

By cutting Adams, 32, the Jets received major cap relief, clearing $29.9 million from this year's cap -- more than doubling their previous cap room. This will allow them to be aggressive in free agency, though it's not a clean break from Adams. There is an $8.4 million dead charge, the prorated renegotiation bonus he received upon being traded to the Jets.

The only logical way to have kept the still-productive Adams was to renegotiate his contract, and that never seemed like a real possibility. He strongly suggested at the end of the season that his future with the team was tied to Rodgers. They tried to trade him, but the contract was immovable.

Just sayin': I did see this tidbit....
For a piece published Tuesday, Jets/NFL insider Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared why he believes Gang Green will end up with Fields later this month.
"There has been a lot of buzz about the prospect of the Jets going after Fields and it makes some sense," Rosenblatt wrote. "He’s young (he turns 26 on Wednesday), mobile and might have some untapped potential even if he’s been inconsistent as a thrower in the NFL. He was off to a nice start in Pittsburgh last year before they ultimately opted to bench him for Russell Wilson."
Meanwhile, teams like the Jets, Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns could all pursue Fields if he reaches free agency. It's unknown if Pittsburgh would match the best offer Fields receives after the free-agent negotiating window opens this coming Monday.
"The most likely outcome for Fields this summer is that a team like the Jets gives him a one- or two-year prove-it type deal loaded with incentives, which would give him a shot at a bigger payday in a year or two," Rosenblatt continued. "Fields has a history with Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson (they played together at Ohio State) and New York will have the cap space to sign him if they’re bidding against other teams — which sounds like a real possibility."

Myers joins former Ohio State teammates Justin Fields (who signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets on Monday), Garrett Wilson and Jeremy Ruckert in New York. Myers changes teams for the first time in his NFL career after four years with the Green Bay Packers, who selected him in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft.
