Geno Smith out 6-10 weeks; 'sucker punch' over $600 dispute

The altercation in the New York Jets locker room that ended with quarterback Geno Smith suffering a broken jaw began as a dispute over $600, sources told ESPN.

Smith, who will miss at least six to 10 weeks with two fractures in his jaw, accepted a $600 plane ticket from IK Enemkpali to appear at the reserve linebacker's football camp in Pflugerville, Texas, on July 11, according to sources. Problems arose when Smith did not show to the camp, which took place days after someone close to Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Miami, sources said.

After Smith did not attend, Enemkpali demanded that the Jets quarterback refund him the $600 he allegedly used to purchase the plane ticket. Smith told Enemkpali he would reimburse him the money, but he had not as of Tuesday morning. Enkempali confronted Smith on Tuesday about the money, and the confrontation ended in a punch and a broken jaw.

Enemkpali, a sixth-round pick in 2014, was released immediately by the team, with coach Todd Bowles saying it's up to Smith if he wants to formally press charges. The coach also said he spoke to the team and then made the decision to let go of Enemkpali.

Geno Smith's jaw will heal, but he'll have hard time recovering from this mess

With one vicious punch, a backup linebacker named IK Enemkpali dramatically changed the New York Jets' season and perhaps the future of the franchise. He recorded his first NFL sack, taking out starting quarterback Geno Smith on Tuesday morning because of a dispute over $600 -- a Jet-on-Jet crime of mind-boggling proportions. Enemkpali broke Smith's jaw in two places and he may have shattered Smith's chances of becoming the franchise's long-term answer at quarterback.

Smith's surgically repaired jaw will heal in six to 10 weeks, according to the Jets, but we may have seen the last of him as the Jets' starter. It's Ryan Fitzpatrick's team now, and there's no guarantee Smith will ever return to his old gig. Todd Bowles made that clear, offering no promises to Smith. As the coach said, "If the other guy is playing well and the boat is going right and there are no waves, and everything is going and we're 4, 5, 6, 7-0, yeah, you're not coming back to start."

Technically, Smith can't lose a job he never had. He still hadn't been named the opening-day starter even though it was heading in that direction. Even if he returns to the lineup at some point in the season, it's fair to wonder if he'd be able to do enough in a small window to win the confidence of the new regime. The new bosses, Bowles and Mike Maccagnan, don't want The Geno Question to linger into 2016. This is the year to commit or get off the pot, and now there are major questions about how the mentally fragile Smith will respond.

Iowa State DC not surprised Geno Smith got jaw jacked

cd0ymzcznguwzdbhnduynddiytjhm2yyzthlmtjjotqwyyznptfjnwiyztrimme1zdywmgfknzayotmzzdg3njbhndq3.jpeg

Quite a number of individuals were surprised by the news that broke Tuesday that New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith had his jaw fractured by the fist of a now-former teammate. Don’t count the Iowa State coaching staff among that group as there’s apparently no loved lost there.

Back in November of 2012, Smith was the quarterback at West Virginia when his Mountaineers traveled to Ames to take on the Cyclones. At halftime, there were apparently some “issues” between Smith and some members of the ISU coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Wally Burnham.

Burnham, still ISU’s coordinator, was asked Wednesday if he was surprised by the locker-room incident involving Smith. “Didn’t surprise me,” the 74-year-old coach succinctly stated. “I was just walking. He [Smith] pushed me.”

Burnham’s son, ISU assistant Shane Burnham, expounded on the history between Smith and the football program. From the Des Moines Register:

“We were holding for the West Virginia team to clear the field,” Shane recalled Wednesday. “There was some extra-curricular activity after the last play of the half — Geno didn’t appreciate something by somebody, and he took out his frustration on dad.”

That didn’t sit well with Shane, who did what every son would do.

“I reacted,” Shane said. “Part of it is that it’s your dad, and part of it is it’s your Iowa State brother. It was family and football family for me. It was a double-whammy.

“He had some choice words for dad, and I might have had a few choice words in return.”

Rex Ryan: IK Enemkpali was a good teammate

Linebacker IK Enemkpali didn’t spend much time out of work after punching his ticket off the Jets roster by punching quarterback Geno Smith in the face on Tuesday and it comes as little surprise that the team rescuing Enemkpali from the waiver wire was the Bills.
.
.
.
“We all know what happened,” Ryan said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “Obviously it was a terrible thing that happened. But IK made a mistake. Instead of listening to this person, that person. . . . We had IK last year. . . . He was a good teammate. Simple as that. It we didn’t think he would be successful on field, in locker room, and in community, he wouldn’t be here.”

Based on above posts, I'm beginning to think Geno Smith might be a real ASSHOLE here.

Jets source says broken-jawed Geno Smith “deserved it”

But while the Jets came out quickly to describe it as a sucker punch, the idea that Smith played a role in his own getting punched is gaining traction.

Via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, unnamed sources within the team are saying Smith “deserved it.”

Smith “was up in [Enemkpali’s] face and pointed/touched his face,” an eyewitness said.

That followed Ryan Clark’s defense of Enemkpali on ESPN Radio earlier Wednesday morning, as he explained the situation surrounding Smith stiffing the linebacker out of $600 worth of travel expenses.

“These guys were in each other’s face,” Clark said, via the New York Post. “Geno put his finger in his face and told the guy, ‘Well, you’re not going to do anything about it.’ . . .

“It became about the fact that Geno wasn’t necessarily apologetic and being in a way remorseful about the money when saying he was going to pay IK back and he didn’t. He was rather smug about it.”
