Yep.....that thread title will definitely hold up in 10 years.

Anyway.....we need a new roof. How the hell do you decide what you need in a new roof. We can get an Amish crew for about $3k less than the other estimates...but you don't get the guarantees or warranties or anything with that. Do I need any of the fancy shit they're pushing or is that like undercoating on a car? The only thing I know is the plan is to be in this house for a long ass time.

Have a roofing “ambulance chaser” come out and get one for free. I’m sure you’ve had a few hail dents up there.

I “believe” metal rooves can be screwed right onto existing shingle roofs if cost is an issue.

We got a metal roof...is expensive but came with a lifetime warranty and actually looks better than a shingle roof. Metal roof can be added to shingle roof as long as it isn’t doubled up. We have dropped anchor here so worth it for us to not have to worry about it again. Has it done last summer...really happy with the results thus far.

Not certain what kind of roofing is popular in PA, but would suggest you not go with a 'gypo' roofer. Whomever you select, make certain you see their liability/workers comp insurance certificate. Without one, and someone takes a tumble off your roof, you're holding the proverbial 'bag' for medical costs. Here in Cali (in Valley), we have 50+ daily swings in temperature. A composit shingle lasts 35 years, with no worries. Very water tight as well. Good luck.
