I've seen the battery recall but we haven't had any problems with any of our Dell notebooks in awhile. Actually, I did have one CD drive die, but that's it. We have approx. 75 Latitude D505-510's and a few Inspirons and they've all been great. I'll have to keep an eye out.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I am looking for some feedback.

Dell laptops are extremely overrated. My girl had the top of the line inspiron, and now her third one has kicked the can. The second one had nearly every meaningful part in the laptop replaced. Too much to go into, but Dell uses suspect parts in their laptops to keep prices down.

I am looking for quality, and am willing to spend more so that she does not have to go through this drama anymore.

From what I have heard, Sony's are the BMW of laptops. Very pricey, but top notch parts. I'm not a big fan of how they force their accessories on you, but that is a lesser concern for her.

How is toshiba's support? I have heard decent things about them, but I do not know that they are on par with Sony/IBM.

Thanks for your feedback in advance.

while on the topic... anyone know of anyone with an Acer?? always seems to be a great value... I THINK I've read good things.. but don't know anyone with actual experience with one...

jWin... I assume you need a box focused on creative.... and first take on that is Sony and Mac...
but if used for traditional apps.. then the others come into play...

If you are an OSU student, do yourself a favor and get an IBM/Lenovo laptop. They are by far the best PC laptops available and OSU students get 36% off.

Click on "Student" or "Faculty," whichever best describes you. 36-fucking-percent off.
if you build the laptop, do you still get 36% off? I have a friend who might be able to order this for me.

We have Compaq's at work. I do not use them regularly but they seem to hold up.

As far as Acer's, I include those in the same category as Gateway. WORTHLESS! I had one years ago in my first real job. One IT staffer spent so much time in my office she had calls forwarded there. They may have improved their quality over the years but I would only use one if given to me.

I have never heard anything but bad things about dell from people who handles large quantities of laptops (ie deploys them to an office of 2000 people). I've heard from about a half dozen of those types, and its never been positive.

On the other hand, I have heard positive things from individuals who have had experience with 1-2 dells.

IBMs on the other hand have proven to be very reliable, tho pricey.
