Our church has no bells.
After completely exploding my personal life last year (as most of you know), I've decided to blow up my career in 2006. I've taken a new job and while it scares the hell out of me, I think it would be more scary to let the opportunity pass.

I'm walking out on a cushy gig with the 3rd biggest firm in Atlanta for a new firm a good friend whom I respect started about a year ago. They're up to about twenty lawyers now and after six months of talking, I'm making the jump. I'm trading cushy security with glacial advancement potential for marginal security and bright upside.

The biggest downside I can think of is that I won't get to come up to Columbus for St. Pat's. Everything else seems to be a positive or negative trade-off depending on one's perspective. I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts/counsel/advice/warnings/cautions/perspectives/experiences.

Since you are an attorney you never had to worry about selling your soul. :wink2:

Seriously, congrats on the move. No matter what happens I doubt you will look back with regret. I'm also considering a change in professions and the only regret I will have is if I do not give it full consideration.

In the mean time, head to Savannah. I'm sure their St. Pat's party is better than anything you will find in Columbus.

Rugby, you definitely don't seem like the kind who likes anything stagnant. You've now proved that by making the jump. I would bet that even if it doesn't work out as well as you hope, you'll still feel better than you would have for not trying.

I know about the St. Patty's day party in Savannah, it is huge, However, I remember going on a field trip on St. Pat's day in High School to Columbus, for a High School kid it was pretty crazy there too. Have yet to see that many guys in green suits in one place at one time.

but keep in mind what douglas macarthur said "there is no security on this earth, only opportunity"

when i first changed jobs i wrote this quote on a piece of paper that i taped to my desk drawer and every time i opened it i was forced to stare and look at it.
"twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. so throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. catch the trade winds in your sails. explore. dream. discover." -mark twain
