I have a concern with the gifts option, fun as it is to play with the new store. We seem to already have issues with the perception of cliques, and this system is going to perpetuate the problem. I liked the awards system which seemed to be recognition from the community for certain agreed-upon reasons rather than personal messages on display. Besides... ain't enough vcash on the Planet to make badges for all my friends here. 
Not that we're taking a vote or anything, and even if we were, we should probably continue to try things out for a while. But FWIW, I'd like to see us consider doing away with this particular option, or setting an expiration date of just a couple of days.

I completely understand your point, but this is the "dead season" as far as Buckeye football goes which obviously serves as the core foundation of our community. If we are going to roll out a new set of features that can be percieved as both fun and distracting this is definately the time of year to do it instead of say..scUM week.
The new "toys" will definately garner more attention now as they are new but just like most toys we recieved as children the excitement wears off and we also find ourselves drifting back to our core interests that don't fade after a few weeks of use.
I personally think a time limit would probably be in the best interest for the gift icons but I also think we should let there be a bit of a trial period with the new features before more permanent tweaks and policies are implemented.

I don't want to get rid of it though because it's a feature normal members can use that can let them show respect to another poster, such as how we can award GPA's.

Some final information on points and purchases. There are several other categories/settings that I didn't list. They (generally) are ways that the point system can be multiplied for various reasons (points per thread, per thread view, per reply). Safe to say they are such small amounts as to make their discussion irrelevant. Other omitted setting have little bearing to end users of the system.

Maybe we should charge people 10 points for starting a thread and increase or decrease that depending on the rating the thread receives. If the thread gets a rating of 5 stars you get 100 point, 4 stars = 50 points, 3 stars = -10, 2 stars = -50, and 1 star = -100. If someone is out of points they can't start a thread. That would keep donny away forever because he would never have enough points to start a thread. It just seems like rewarding people for starting threads is a bad idea.
