• I know it is tough times for many these days. After 25 years of employment I was laid off today. I have never been in this situation before. I am currently working my network very hard both online and personal.

Anyone have any networking suggestions that have helped you get from the person you know to the person who you need to know?

What business you in? I think networking can vary a little from one field to another.

I'm in the GIS/Engineering/Surveying business. I have a Masters in Management and have recently been an Operations Manager and a Client Manager for my former employers fortune 500 companies. I have worked in both the public and private sectors.

Linkedin has been a great tool and I a local parish has a networking group that I am going to attend. My daughter heads to college next fall (OSU has accepted her and she is considering), so I am open to moving for the right opportunity.

As if getting out of a castle infested with Anthrax isn't reason enough...

Seriously, sorry to hear this has happened to you. Good luck finding something you would enjoy and finding it soon.

I'm in the same situation. I was let go at the end of November, which has never happened to me before, either. It sucks. I've been hitting the internet job boards hard, but I think one of the best things to do is get in with a few good recruiters. If they're good, they really have knowledge of openings that you may not otherwise hear about. I'd recommend doing that right away.

I'm going to give myself until maybe mid-Feb, and if nothing happens by then I'll go out and pick up some kind of hourly job just to keep money coming in while I keep looking.

I'm open to ideas as well....

I was fired from my job 2 and a half years ago and went with a couple head hunters to find a new one. They have contacts that are beyond what most people have access to. Another plus for me at the time was since I didn't have a job I was willing to take a contract position that I wouldn't have left my old job for in the past. From what I've seen many companies like to bring in employees as a contractor to make sure they work out before they invest a full time position on them. For me getting fired was actually one of the best things that could have happened to me because I'm in a great situation now. I'm sure jobs are harder to come by now, but I've had at least 2 head hunters contact me in the past week to see if I'm interested.
On a side now unemployment is a good thing if you get enough that you can scratch by while your on it. I would spend a couple hours a day job searching and then catch up on movies that I hadn't seen for the rest of the day. Yes I'm a lazy bastard.

K... since there may be a number of folks that could use some counsel... this may be as good a thread as any to convey some 'words of wisdom'.. just understand how much you're paying for them.. nuthin... so FWIW.. I can help

As I relayed to B-Bri.. don't get thin-skinned - this is a difficult path.. and not for the timid.. you need to ignore the anger and hurt.. you can lick your wounds later.. it's time to get into attack mode NOW.. not tomorrow

You have a job.. that will take 40 hrs a week and your job is to get a job... every day you don't spend 8 hours on this mission will only delay you another day in your quest..

Go buy a book.. either
Thru The Brick Wall or
Rites of Passage at $100000 by Lucht
They are fabulous.. either one.. extremely similar content

They will teach you how to do the networking gig
Networking is where it's at ... resumes are NOT
86% of all jobs never see the light of day they are NEVER posted ... recruiters don't see them either..
Only 14% of all jobs are posted so only spend 14% of your time looking at postings
86% of your time is to be networking and doing informational interviews

Do a resume and if you'd like.. send it to me... know that I?m gonna tear it to bits
But my goal will be to get you a job.. not make you warm and fuzzy
I will help you make a better resume your goal is to NEVER use it
Resumes are job blockers.. not helpers.. trust me
Networking finds jobs

I'll do a posting about today's resumes and what they should generally look like

Recruiters are in not in business to help you find a job... recruiters are in business to get paid from their clients... He can't create a job.. he can only fill one that is already out there... Spend no more than 14% of your time with recruiters.. they are job blockers...

A recruiter is paid by a client to find someone that fulfills ALL the requirements... Your resume must have all the same keywords as on his requirements order... He's not going to risk his neck for you and tell a client "consider this guy... I think he comes close and you'll like him".. He needs to provide someone who hits all the checkmarks...

Immediately create a spreadsheet
In this spreadsheet will be everyone you know.. everyone
List should be huge include everyone you come into contact with
Especially anyone you have interacted with at other firms. conferences. classes.. projects.. etc

Next .. you are to divide this list into three columns
A) The folks you are virtually sure can help you
B) The folks that maybe can help you
C) The folks you are virtually sure can't or won't help
This list will become evergreen and will change ALL THE TIME
New folks will be added no one ever gets removed
And most often, folks will move from one column to the other

There's a lot of work to do so strap it on here we go

I am willing to help... and I'll go in steps.. this is merely part 1

I have a question about online applications. I've filled out several, but have yet to recieve a single response. The nature of online applications doesn't allow for me to contact the local...employer. It sends the app to a general pool of applicants, and is only looked at when the employer needs an immediate replacement, I'm assuming. Some employers don't even have an option to fill one out in person. My question is, does anyone have any experience being hired or hiring from an online application? I know this doesn't apply to most here, but any help would be appreciated.

To give an example:

I'm currently trying to hold out until the weather breaks so I can return to construction, as that would be my first choice. I filled out an online app for Giant Eagle, just to get a damn job. I called to follow up on the application, and was told that they don't really look at them until an immediate need arises, even though I filled it out specific to one location. This really pisses me off.

I need a fucking job in the worst way. Not for financial reasons. Well, not YET anyway. I just need to get busy. I'm so fucking tired of not working.

In 1980 they used to get about 300 apps (hardcopy) per job

Today, with the internet processes, they get anywhere from 3000-10,000 apps per posting

So how does it work...

The document goes thru a keyword search engine... using whatever keywords the HR employee has selected... this process will rank the documents based on # of search-word matches... if you aren't using the exact same keywords as the individual who made the entries, your resume won't be one of the files 'selected' for the HR person to review...

That's a key reason resumes are job-blockers...

and conceptually the exact same process a recruiter uses... with them matching up keywords as selected by his client...

Thanks a lot NJ. That answers my question. Seems to me, though more convenient, they are overlooking some good potential employees in favor of that convenience.
