Need Advice. (New addition to the Buckeye family)

My wife and I just had a baby over the weekend. Kristen Nichole was born Saturday morning. Late Saturday night it was determined that she was having trouble keeping her sugar levels up on her own so she was transfered ti NICU. She has been there since and her numbers are going up and down. Its very frustrating not being able to take her home and it looks to be at least another week before she can go home at the soonest. I'm letting you guys know about this for two reasons. 1st is to see if any of you have been through this. If so how long did it take for your kids body to regulate its own levels of sugar. Second, I have a lot of friends and family that are wanting updates. Do any of you know of any forums that are similar to the format that we have here at BuckeyePLanet that I could use as a meens of communication. Instead of having to go home and check an e-mail it would be nice to be able to send a link to everyone where thye could go and check on updates and post questions.

I can not offer you any advice on you baby's condition but I have had experience with the NICU. I have twin boys that are now 3... when they were born they both weighed 3lbs and were in the NICU for almost 7 weeks. Scariest time of my life. There will be ups and downs and sometimes you may not know what the hell is going on. The best advice I can give is to ask questions... even if you think they are not important. We had great doctors and nurses that spent a lot of time with us and gave us all kinds of info. If you're not sure what a doctor meant have him explain it again. Also, get your rest. You and your wife need to take care of yourselves too. The baby is in good hands with the doctors and nurses. I'm not sure of the sugar levels... maybe someone can give you some info on that. Among other things one of my boys had a bleed in his head and the other almost needed heart surgery to to a PDA (thank god he didn't) but we didn't have to deal sugar levels.

The things they can do these days in the NICU are amazing.

I cannot help you with the NICU except to say over 28 years ago I spent the first couple of months in the NICU myself (was premature, and my mom was very ill at the same time).

Congratulations, and good luck. Similar to Loky, I have 5 year old twins who were born 10 weeks premature and weighed about 3 lbs. too. They spent about 5 weeks in the nicu. I know its frustrating, but the people there are phenomenal, and they can teach you so much about how to care for your child. Just think if you would have brought her home, without knowing there was a problem. I cannot help with the sugar issue, hopefully it is something that can correct itself with little maturing and some breastmilk. Like Loky said spend as much time there as you can, learn everything you can from them while you are there, but try to get your rest too. You will need it when you bring her home.

Myfamily.com is very nice. My brother puts up pictures of his one-year-old regularly, and it's awesome to be able to keep up from so far away. Bunch of family registered there, so our contact info is all in one place, and we get email reminders about birthdays and such.

Good luck and god bless bro, my eldest son was in the NICU for about 10 days but that was because he was premature, then they sent him home with the "glow worm" outfit. The only thing I can say is have faith, and there are prayers from my family to yours.

There are many parents with preme's and twins in the ICU we are at and its pretty obvious you guys had it much worse than we do now. What we are going through right now tough but I pray I never have to go through that. THanks again.

NB.. my sister-in-law is a neonate nurse in Columbus... rest assured. it's not a job for these folks... their passion is off the charts... they are pros who know their stuff and they care... LoKy is right on... your medical team wants you to be comfortable... they will answer everything and as many times as you need... best of luck and prayers to the princess...

Northern - congrats and good luck. Hope everything is smooth sailing from here.

Not to take away from you, but this seems a good place to put my "drama" out there as well. My sister is currently at OSU hospital, in labor. She already has three girls, and this next one is a boy. The problem is, out of a 40 week pregnancy, she has not yet hit the 28 week mark. If everything goes as planned, she will deliver tomorrow (they managed to slow down her labor to give her steroids to help the baby's chances), and then the child will likely be kept in NICU for around 12 weeks, possibly longer. I just hope and pray that this kid makes it, and is (and remains) healthy. Not looking for an outpouring of sympathy, per se, but I will never turn down prayers.

NorthernBuck - nice idea on the web site. I used to do email to keep everyone updated.

FKA - my wife delivered our boys at 28 weeks. It's a good thing that they have some time to get some steroids in her and make her comfortable. My wife went into labor at 9:30pm and delivered at 10:45pm. We barely had time to make it to the hospital, I drove 110mph to get there and that stress didn't help the situation.
