I would be remiss if I didn't comment on how well the Nebraska fans treated the Buckeye visitors in Lincoln over the weekend. Perhaps this has been mentioned in the game thread which I haven't read yet, but even so, it deserves its own thread, at least temporarily.
My buddy and I got to Lincoln around 9 am on Saturday morning. We spent a lot of time walking around the stadium area, tailgating with some Nebraska fans, and talking to many of them after the game was over.
The number of times we heard any Buckeye fans being treated rudely by any Huskers: zero.
The number of times that we heard "Welcome to Lincoln", "We're glad you're here", "How do you like Lincoln"", "Good luck today", and simliar comments: I can't give a good estimate, and it's not because I was drinking, it's because the number was an amazingly high one.
We met BP guest knapplc (that ends in 'L C', not 'I C"), and he was escorting a group of Buckeye fans, explaining who was in the statues besides Tom Osborne and telling them other things about the stadium. He walked us around the area for a while, and then we ended up back at a tailgate that was close enough to one of the statues that my tired old arm could've thrown a football that far. It was the same lot that Warren Buffett parks in, but he doesn't normally join the tailgaters. We were treated very well by our gracious Nebraska fans, and had a fine time tailgating there and talking football, while hoping that the high winds wouldn't blow away their tailgate!
On a side note, MaliBuckeye stopped by, and he was kind enough to explain that the first part of his user name comes from Malibu (I honestly had not figured that out) without asking me if the 73 in my name came from my IQ.
In the afternoon, we left the tailgate to head over to the Buckeye Bash at a theater downtown. That was a good time, I got to shake hands and say Hi to Gordon Gee and Archie Griffin. After those two talked to the crowd and the cheerleaders were on stage for a bit, they had a little Buckeye trivia contest. The emcee was asking questions from the stage and folks would just yell out the answers from the audience. Some wiseass in the front row got 5 in a row correct before the pressure got to him. They only gave me 2 free drink coupons for all of those answers, but it was getting late and I could barely down them both before leaving the theater - we couldn't take drinks outside, and I wasn't going to waste free beer!
After that, we went to the game, and like almost everybody on this board, we loved the first two and a half quarters a lot better than the last quarter and a half. After the game, we went back to the Nebraska tailgate where we'd spent a fair amount of time earlier in the day. We congratulated them on their big comeback victory, and wished them well for the rest of the season. Everybody agreed that we'd root for the others' team to beat TSUN. They were pleased that we came back to talk to them after a rough loss, although based on how well they treated visitors it's the type of thing they deserved in return.
Side note to Gatorubet - In case you were wondering what happened to the shoes Tommie Frazier wore in the 62-24 game, I'm now on good terms with the Husker lady that has them (She really does - he signed them - and any money he got for them was OK since that was his last game ).
We heard some stories of some Nebraska fans that were shocked at how badly they had been treated in Madison the week before. That's not a surprise to most Buckeye fans that have been there, but it was a rude welcome to many Huskers into the B1G.
I realize that I can't convince everybody how they should treat visitors to Columbus. But how opposing fan bases are treated does make a difference in how a University and a community are perceived. If somebody wants to be rude to a Wisconsin fan because of how they were treated in Madison, I can understand that sentiment.
But when the folks from Nebraska make the visit to the Horseshoe next year, please try to remember to treat them as you would like to be treated; because that's what they do extremely well, and that's what they deserve in return.
