I think you can also add to that, many college offensive schemes aren't played at the NFL level and are much more simplified. So even a 1st rd QB hasn't had to read defenses much and has few reads before tucking and running or just gun slinging it to 1 of the 2 reads(and 1 is usually a checkdown). Players have gotten more athletic over the years but have low football IQ, and a number are starting to see their footing after 5+yrs(and multiple teams).The only guess I have at the trend;
Overall, pre-college players are getting skill, speed/strength and nutritional training like no one ever before them (in all sports) so its not a lack of talent or training.
What's, probably, lacking is the same issue at the NFL level, no time to develop. You spend first round NFL dollars on a QB he has to produce right now. Same now for NIL money in college then you add in the ticking clock. 5 years for both. You spend the money and the player isn't ready, then you've helped train him for the next team where he may actually be ready.
The system needs adjustment of some sort to give players a chance to develop at a slower pace.
Right now in college, take OSU- no one is going to develop for 3 years to play the last two. If someone does it means they will likely be taking less than market NIL money. There may be the occasional die hard fan type that will do that but then consider, will OSU "spend" a roster spot on a kid that far from paying off?
Money x Shelf Life does not lend itself to patience.
“The players are not being trained in the weight room the way they used to be,” the coach said. “It’s development, building their foundation. We’re really not getting that anymore because so many guys are transferring around, going to two schools, three schools. Also, being scared to train guys and push them too much because they’ll get in the portal. They’re going to all these different places, and they don’t have a foundation with the fundamentals. We’re not getting the same developed foundation of guys that we were 10 years ago, even five years ago.”
