NCAA - slowly ruining football (rules changes - merged)

Tressel's comments on the clock rule changes from last week's press conference (which I had videotaped off ESPNews):

"Well, I don't expend a whole bunch of energy on being upset about things like that. Uh, you know, it's the same for us as it is for the others, and, uh you know, we're gonna have to, I guess, play though it a little bit. Someone within the decision making process did the study and decided that this would be good. Now I wasn't a part of that, and I don't want to, you know, make predictions as to whether it will be good or it won't be good.

I'm sure a year from now, maybe we'll have some examples of where it had an impact and so forth, and...

I like the game. I don't know if I like tinkering with the game, I've never been a huge replay guy. You know, I just like ... Officials do a good job. They do the best they can, and all these things...

But, whatever. I'm not against the rules. I'll be anxious to see...I just...

My job is to make sure we manage the clock the best we can do. If we do that, I'm sure that new rule won't affect us.

And maybe we can evaluate at the end of the season, you know, if it's something that's... maybe shouldn't have been done, but I don't have a strong enough opinion right now."
Is it just me or was Tressel doing an impersonation of President Bush?

On a more serious note his comments don't surprise me one bit... I'd imagine most coaches would prefer not to tinker with the rules just for the sake of "speeding up" the game.

time

i'm just against them doing anything to cut down on the numbers of plays in a game. I enjoy watching the plays and players , not commercials or network spots. The game of football takes 60 minutes , or one hour, not 3 hours and 30 min. All they want to do is not cut the crap, and so they hurt the game. Cripes, an official time out takes 6 minutes at times and all that time the players are standing on the sidelines or in a group in the middle of the field smelling armpits or something. Dont try to tell me they like standing around when they are pumped up and hot to trot!

The clock changes are going to have an impact on things like offensive and defensive stats and records. Team A, for instance could hold their opponents to an average of 4.9 YPP in 2005 and 5.0 YPP for 2006, and still end up holding opponents to few YPG. In short all individual stats should trend down: rushing yards, attempts, recieving yards, receptions, completions, tackles, sacks ect ect.

I hate the new rule changes. Why does the game need shortened? I've never heard one coach or player complain about the length of the game! Football games/season are already too short!!!!!! Hopefully the clock changes will only last one season.

Glad to see this. This rule change irritates me more than anything since the designated hitter rule.

College football kicks butt and they want to screw with it. The ultimate in greed.

Would love to see this accompanied with a call to boycott the primary sponsors of NCAA games.

I signed.

Just who is it who thinks these games are too long? I don't think they're long enough. We only get 12 plus a bowl game each year. I wouldn't mind if each quarter were 30 minutes. The more the better.

Ugh. I can see the NCAA sitting around a table (it's a pretty big table) and saying,

NCAA Old Dude #1: "We sanction a bazillion sports. Some are awesome, like football and basketball, and some are pretty boring to watch, like synchronized swimming, and pretty much anything else that isn't football or basketball. It isn't very fair to those athletes who participate in the other sports, so let's level the playing field. Let's do something to make all those other sports better."

NCAA Old Dude #2: "We can make the swim team have to avoid sharks or alligators."

NCAA Old Dude #3: "That would be awesome!"

NCAA Old Dude #1: "I'd imagine that the PETA jerks would be mad."

NCAA Old Dude #2: "How about we have miscellaneous soldiers firing their weapons at random events. Not to kill, but to injure. You know.. shoot the contestants in the legs."

NCAA Old Dude #3: "That would be awesome!"

NCAA Old Dude #1: "This sounds too hard. Let's just do stuff to bring down football, and then things will be more level. No one seemed to notice when we told the referees to quit calling holding, right?"

NCAA Old Dude #3: "That would SUCK!"

NCAA Old Dude #1: "Screw you, old man!"

last week doug fluty made a great point. if you want to shorten the game, SHORTEN THE GAME. don't change the rules. make each quarter shorter. that is way too simple for the NCAA to figure out though.
