NCAA - slowly ruining football (rules changes - merged)

looks like there used to be an exemption that somehow got lost in all the revisions they've made over the years; More surprised this hasn't come up sooner than this.

Thanks, I just saw that at the link. I wonder how it got lost in the shuffle.

Off topic but our unit team was pretty awesome. Two former college players, three if you count the Capt who played for Annapolis....and our running back was a SSgt who the Raiders would regularly send people down to try & get him to sign. He also hapened to be married to Blaze from American Gladiators.

Does anyone here remember this?

I only ask because I was thinking of the new targeting rule with added bonus EJECTION. How does this apply at the goal line? I mean if a running back goes airborne isn't it likely a defender who launches to meet him will be leading with his helmet most of the time? I know this is an old pro game but based on this new rule, would there be multiple penalties and ejections during this goal line stand?

I'd hate to think that because of penalties and ejections the goal line stand would go the way of the dinosaur as it might be one of my favorite things to see during a game.

According to what I just heard on CBS sports The targeting rule is reviewable upstairs, kinda. I guess the they can say "no that wasn't targeting don't eject the kid", but the 15 yard penalty will remain in effect. WTF is wrong with these guys?

According to those whackjobs at the NCAA - this game never happened. Bunch of jackices, that NCAA.

NCAA Pres: "How can we punish a team?"
NCAA Board: "Let's vaccate wins!"
NCAA Pres: "Yeah, good idea! Then they won't think the games ever happened!"

Funny - same idiots that made this game 'go away' are the same fools that are changing the rules of the game as well.

The targeting rule is as follows:
• No player shall target and initiate contact vs. opponent with the crown of his helmet.
• No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent.

Freakin' "Targeting Rule"! I hate that this has become a game changer as a rule. Iowa scored on Roby's replacement , Reeves. Maybe it's just me, but that should not have even been a personal foul. Roby hit him with the shoulder, first. A similar play by an Iowa player happened later in the game. No call.
I referee should not have this much power to change a game.
There's too much subjectivity to it.
Narrow it down! Or get rid of it!

These are the six Division I representatives of the thirteen member NCAA football rules committee that thought the new targeting rule was a good idea (it's passing was unanimous):

  • Mike Bellotti, Oregon, athletics director (chair)
  • Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin, athletics director
  • Randy Edsall, [then] Connecticut, coach
  • Chris Hatcher, Georgia Southern, coach
  • Tony Samuel, Southeast Missouri State, coach
  • Ky Snyder, San Diego, athletics director

They didn't even throw the flag until the guy didn't get up.
