NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

I agree. It's as if (1) they don't want to say anything negative about USC, a program they were hyping like none other in the last few years or (2) they don't want to admit that they're behind yahoo sports on the investigating curve.

ESPN has zero evidence regarding this matter and everything so far has been he said, nothing you can really hold onto. I think ESPN is sitting back waiting for YAHOO to fall on their face.

When they could be setting up camp on campus and trying with everything within their being to find something to prove this case like they did here.

But, its USC. So its all good and shit.

Short of a USC coach showing up on one of the tapes discussing payouts, or may be Bush talking about getting payouts from the school (even the later might well not be enough) nothing will happen to USC regarding this issue. It's entirely possible it will drag on long enough for the Woodson statute of limitations to kick in too.

USC gave the agents in question along with other agents access to the locker room and on the sidelines in games, you cannot get that type of access without consent of the coaches or administration, and its easy to find out if they were there. (Hell there is probably a photograph or two from a photographer by mistake) remember the Ed Martin case, Michigan was tied to Ed Martin because Steve Fisher at first denied knowing him, and later on it was found Martin received tickets to games from the Michigan coaching staff. USC provided access to people that profit by the monetary gains of their clients. This case mirrors the Michigan case, because now the federal government is involved and they can dig where the NCAA cannot.

Tip of an iceberg?
It would be the next step to assume that more agents and USC players were getting money.
Typically when we see these things develop coaches tend to leave for
"better" opportunities.
Uh Oh!

The fact that agents are often seen hanging around USC practices and games.

First, that is not quite what you said (Carroll admitting that he plays loose with the rules). Second, the biggest problem is runners, not agents. Third, the staff is not nearly as accommodating to agents as Yahoo would have you believe.

USC faces a tougher situation than any other school in the NCAA. Los Angeles already has throngs of agents and wannabe agents from the entertainment industry. Believe what you want, but, just like outside fans and the MoC scandal, you don't have anywhere close to the whole picture.

I don't hear USC fans complaining about that during recruiting season....

Yes, ignore UF who laid it out to dry and target me. Go after the smaller fish, I see... :wink2:
Alright. As I recall, there was an article last year talking about how Petey actually called the NFL to talk about options with agents. The article basically said he was in a tight spot because of the LA factor and the stardom of USC and he was trying to find a safe way to basically "filter" the agents. He figured he couldn't keep them out, so he mine as well come up with a more creative solution while staying within the NCAA and also working with the NFL.
I couldn't remember the name of the NFL contact though, and when you search for things like "Pete Carroll agents" all sorts of stuff comes up. As I recall, it wasn't in referance to any Bushgate issues. Just an interesting article on some of the inner-goings at USC. Obviously Pete hadn't done anything wrong -- but it was also obvious he was straddling the line. Thus my previous statement.

That is because it is a silent verbal.

Gene Upshaw. Pete Carroll is and has been trying to work with the NFL to get the rules changed. That has nothing to do with "straddling the line."

This did get some play on ESPN today. Regarding the Heisman, they said that if Bush were found to be ineligible for part of the 2005 regular season, it would probably be looked at by the Heisman trustees. At that point, a simple majority vote of 5 of the 9 trustees is what would decide whether or not to strip Bush of the Heisman.

Some national media coverage.

There's a growing cloud in USC's sunny sky

So now, tapes have supposedly surfaced of Reggie Bush while he was at USC. And apparently, they're not of long touchdown runs against Fresno State.

If a report on Yahoo.com is correct, a federal probe has turned up recorded conversations between an investor in a failed sports marketing agency and Bush and his family, possibly discussing gifts and cash during Bush's heady days as a Trojan.

The report mentions $280,000 worth of largesse. Considerable pizza money for a college kid ? if he wants to buy pizza for the entire population of Pasadena.

Reputed Bush tapes could complicate probes

The NCAA and Pacific-10 Conference continue to look into allegations that Reggie Bush received improper benefits while playing football at Southern California, but another investigation that could involve incriminating audio tapes is overshadowing the case.

The Bush investigation "is ongoing both by us and the NCAA," Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon said Thursday. "It's open-ended at this point." The NCAA's Erik Christianson added, "It has been difficult to obtain cooperation from those involved" but did not comment further. USC spokesman Tim Tessalone declined comment.

Unlike when the original claims were brought to surface by yahoo.com, this time we have major news organizations willing to take the risk and investigate themselves. Does not look good for Bush, USC on the other hand will probably walk away with nothing more than a "make sure this doesn't happen again."

Bush doesn't stand to lose anything except the Heisman and maybe have to pay back the benefits he got. Which I'm sure he can afford on his salary. USC, on the other hand, could end up with probation, loss of scholarships, forfeiture of games, have their national championship wiped from the books, etc. etc. And the worst part about these investigations is once they find a string, they pull it til it stops. Who knows if it was limited to just Bush?
