NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

If the dissolution of the NCAA comes to pass, or the 4x16-team super conferences secede from the NCAA, then I'd encourage Scott & the Pac 10 to get an invitation out to Utah. Orrin Hatch will be kicking kittens on the hill if Utah gets left out.

I wonder if the 4x16 telling the NCAA to get bent would result in USC trying to ignore the penalties by claiming that there was no longer a "governing authority". IIRC, that whole "no governing authority" thing worked the last time it was used.

If we end up with four super conferences wouldn't ESPN be the default governing body?

By the way the USC people (Kiffen, Carroll) acting surprised about the NCAA punishiment is a bunch of BS that is being directed by USC lawyers.

1. If Kiffin didn't know about the NCAA punishment coming down the pipe, then why has USC offered every recruit in the country this year? Typically USC can be selective in who they offer, why the change in strategy Lane?

2. The univerisity is worried about any liability issues that may have ocurred during the last few recruiting classes. i.e., if the coaches lied to recruits about the ongoing NCAA investigation and the possible punishment coming down the pipe (Seantrell Henderson). Thus, watch Pete and Lane as they release their public statements and watch how they are reading carefully selected words (provided by the USC lawyers) off a Q-card. Pete's video is especially obvious, watch how he looks up as he is obviously reading off his statement. Over the next few months Lane, Pete and others etc etc will be on the same page and will recite the same word for word statements to help USC avoid any type of punative action toward the university. In a nutshell, the university knew what was coming and deep down have no problem with the punishment. Its the other possible legal actions that the university is trying to stave off.

Jrs & Srs can transfer without sitting out a year (see below). I saw where the coach can initiate contact.

The NCAA Bylaw 14.8.2 reads, "the Committee on Infractions can recommend a waiver to allow student athletes to transfer and play immediately if the bowl ban is for the rest of their eligibility." And indeed, the NCAA Committee has reportedly granted such a waiver to the USC juniors and seniors, for whom the bowl ban would span the rest of their career. Now, they can transfer to the school of their choosing while avoiding the NCAA's designated one-year on the sideline for transfers.
In other words, aside from losing countless scholarships, bowl opportunities, recruiting leverage, and all sorts of revenue, the USC Trojans could have many of their best players poached by rivals in the ensuing months. They don't call it a "death penalty" for no reason.
Some of the more prominent Trojans that are now free to elsewhere include WR Ronald Johnson, RB Marc Tyler, LB Chris Galippo, and countless others with a 5-star pedigree and a free pass to head to the program of their choice. One guy that won't be leaving? QB Matt Barkley, a starter as a true freshman last year, and widely looked upon as the next great quarterback at Southern Cal. Now, you have to wonder...
Will Matt Barkley have any teammates to throw to?

See USC depth chart (below), is there anyone Tressel should be contacting?

Serious question- Is there reason to believe that the hypothetical 4x16 would want to tell the NCAA to get bent?

College Player Database - Depth Chart

Tyron Smith would be nice at tackle and is a junior, so he'd have this year and next year. Ronald Johnson would be a nice field stretcher at WR, but that is a difficult position to learn overnight. At linebacker you have a good one in Chris Galippo but with our depth, it'd be tough to mix in another junior. We could use some more DT depth so a guy like Jurrel Casey, Christian Tupuo, or even Armond Armstead would be nice.

All of that said, I'd say there is a 0% chence of Tress even sniffing around the program.

Not sure if this was mentioned (decently long thread), but SportsCenter just reported that the one year wait for transfers was waived for USC juniors and seniors, and USC must allow anyone who wants to transfer to go. Also, school are allowed to inquire first about a player.
I saw that earlier today. They reported it as if it was a breaking story. It's the rules you idiots.

Transfers could be a double whammy for USC. The 10 schollie per year hit is not just against the 85, it is against the 25 initial counters. So if they should be sitting below 60 after this senior class graduates they can't even get to 75 next year.

Add to that the potential for early departures. Why would any kid with NFL prospects want to come back for their senior year with no post-season option?

Then top that off with their use of JUCOs - at least four of their 38 recruits the past two years.

This really gets critical in the last year of their punishment. If I am doing the math correctly the team they field in 2013 will include:

18 recruits from 2010
+ 15 from 2011
+ 15 from 2012
+ 15 from 2013
= 63 scholarship athletes

+ any redshirts from 2009 who don't leave early
- any early departures from 2010
- any transfers, injuries or just-didn't-pan-outs from any of those classes

= a fun 2013 season for USC

anybody really think they're going to survive the four years probation with Lane "minor infraction" Kiffin at the helm?
No. This is worse than any of their fucking fans or members of the program can imagine...

1. Their staff is a violation waiting to happen.
2. Their AD is an arrogant boob apparently intent on getting in a contest of chicken with the NCAA
3. Their programs are surrounded by boosters who either don't know the rules or choose to ignore them (including the ones on TV).
4. They hired a coach with a 12-21 record who hasn't shown one inkling of actual HC talent.

They are capital F-U-C-K-E-D.

Who is already suspected of bending the rules and is now under greater pressure to recruit the very best than he could have imagined.

And who is operating, as stated, under the message from management that "nothing we do is wrong".

Anyone think SC was lying to recruits about possible sanctions? Naaaaa! They wouldn't do that would they? :tongue2:
Goin' to be fun watching Oregon/Stanford/Oregon State put half a hundred on them.
And is Kiffin even capable of staying out of trouble for 4 years? That would seem to be against his nature.
I think they get in more trouble.
