NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

I don't see any compelling reason for him to cooperate...

That said....I thought the more interesting disclosure in that article was the part where they said they didn't impose any penalties on the football program because they feel they have some points to make to the NCAA.

This runs contrary to the rumor that USC was instructed not to self impose any penalties on the football program and to wait until the NCAA discussed it with them....and it also strikes me as bizarre that they feel they have a compelling case that would suggest they didn't run afoul of NCAA regs...even in the face of testimony from Bush, et al.

I smell.......epic fail. I just can't tell yet if the egg will be on the face of the trojans or the NCAA investigating arm.

Truth: Fact 1. With the exception of ND and the rare OOC games that pit one top 15 program against another Top 15, college football is extremely regional in its appeal. Thus most conference games -- OSU vs Indiana, Florida vs Kentucky, Texas vs K-State have limited attraction outside of Gainesville, Columbus and Austin.

My Suppositions based on Fact 1: TV contracts -- the Networks ain't paying full fare for something they can't sell in the East -- DC to Boston -- market. Hence the NCAA doesn't say a word about the deal between NBC and ND. The Networks have a tough time selling anything west of Austin to begin with. Take USC out of the package and you have Stanford playing Wazoo at 11 PM EST.

The NCAA NEEDS TV money and something to market on the West Coast. WO USC they're stuck with Masoli and Gerhardt one of whom will be gone.

Conclusion, short of establishing a horse/car theft ring and recruiting know Al Queda agents I don't think the NCAA gives a rat's ass what goes on in LA as long as they get a USC program they can market.

If you had lived in Cincinnati during the Mayo years you would have seen that this kid and his family had no concern for anything but whatever Mayo wanted. He's been spoiled by his family, his friends, AAU coaches, North College Hill School System, Oak Hills Academy, agents and leeches and USC. It takes a village to raise prima donna.

AAU coaches who tried to run the NCH program, discipline issues that got swept under the rug until they couldn't be swept there anymore, parents who blamed the school for Mayo's discipline problems, recruiting by other coaches in Cincinnati, if I don't get my way I'm gonna take my ball and go elsewhere, a substantial list most of it documented in the Enquirer.

The NCAA already looks bad and gives credence to USC's belief that they are too big to get hit by significant sanctions. The arrogance of the USC athletic department is astounding, but maybe the NCAA's fault ultimately.
Kind of like what happened on Wall Street.
Without regulation with teeth institutions will operate like the wild west.

LOL....this thread is creeping toward it's fourth birthday....and the very first post remains as current and germane to the story as is was the day it was originally made.

Will this thread be four years old and remain sans any thing official from the NCAA... or will the committee conclude their meeting with USC and let us know something before April?

Sounds like a decent V bet premise.....

EDIT and PS to Cleve....did you ever think this would still be an open issue years later when you asked: we will see where this leads?

Put the shoe on the other foot, and if one recalls, there was a big push to make Archie the AD at OSU (when Geiger left, Archie was Asst AD). Do you believe in your heart of hearts that any president of the Ohio State University could/would have fired Archie? No way, no how. Same with USC. We'll see if the NCAA has any cojones, or 'lets it go' rather than vacating the wins, making them pay back the bowl proceeds, and losing schollies (a la OSU did, and Florida St needs to have done), like should do.

Absolutely disagree. If Ohio State's athletic department sunk to the lows under Archie that USC has hit under Garrett, I believe that Archie would 100% be offered the "chance" to resign and if he refused would be let go. Gordon Gee's entire history supports this, and the power centers on the BOT (Les Wexner and John Ong in particular) along with Eric Fingerhut would back him 100%.
