NCAA 3-point line needs to be moved back

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • After watching some of the games so far this season, it's just reaffirmed to me how much the 3-point line needs moved back at least a foot or two.

I shouldn't see 7 ft. centers taking three pointers and making them.

To me the 3-point line should reward good shooters not avg. shooters.

I really noticed this last night when watching the Gonzaga vs. Mich. St. game. The offenses are getting stale and boring b/c all they seem to do is pass it around the arc or kick it outside from the lane to shoot a three.

I beg to difer, but Peja Stojakovic may not be 7 foot and a center, but he's a 6'10" SF and he rains those 3's down all the time in the NBA.

    1) The MSU-Gonzaga game was probably the greatest game I've ever seen on any level. They did not miss a FT in the 2nd half, 1st OT, 2nd OT or 3rd OT (according to my dad's retelling). Every time one team would make a big shot, the other would answer with a big shot.

Since they all made FTs with alarming frequency, should they move the FT line back?

    2) today's players have ignored fundamentals and instead learned to drain threes and make acrobatic moves towards the rim.

    3) the fact that centers can shoot threes is not proof that the line is too short. It just shows a shift in what types of shots big guys practice.

There were missed fould shots in the second half, and a couple in OT. I think there was a total of 4 in the whole game between the two teams.

Well when the 3 is such an easy shot to make that is why they have been taught to take so many. If they moved the line back you would see guys taking 18 foot jumpers instead of 20.

The problem I have with the 3pt. line is that it is so much different from pros and the same as high school. I think these kids should be at a higher level than high school and under pros.

Is moving it back a couple feet going to make a huge difference? Many of them fire shots from a step or two back.

edit: how much did it affect the pro game when they moved it back?

How many excellent midrange shooters are there in the NCAA? That is a lost art nowadays, and was one reason Daequan Cook was rated so highly (best midrange shot in hs according to many). either way it was a ridiculously low amount. I hope it's on espn classic.

Peja is a good shooter. Right now, every marginal shooter out there thinks that they can drain the three. If everyone can do it, then why reward them with an extra point? I agree that it needs to be moved back. Maybe make it halfway between the current distance and the NBA distance.

As for the NBA going back not making a difference. That can be said for shooting %, but it can't be said for who was actually shooting the ball. When the NBA moved the line back it went from everyone shooting three's, to those guys getting penetration and kicking it out to your best shooters. Also, for the same reason as expanding the lane another foot. I think that increasing the three-point distance helps create more room inside the three line. As big as the players are now, it's almost more difficult to shoot a mid-range jumper than it is to drive in for a lay-up, or just step back and shoot the trey.
