Buckeye Beach Bum
nbc4

One letter to the editor in Sunday's edition of The Columbus Dispatch belittled Tressel's "dog eats the first-down playbook." Another accused sports writers of being too chummy with the team and making alibis for the poor effort and production. Still another said that with the team 3-0 no one wants to discuss the "elephant in the living room" -- the Buckeyes' inability to move the ball.

Ross, however, may soon be splitting time with someone, possibly freshman Antonio Pittman. There are some rumblings that Pittman might be doing more than sharing the position.

Pittman has been schooled in the offense since graduating early from Akron Buchtel to join the Buckeyes for spring practice. He has shown a propensity for breaking tackles and finding daylight -- skills that Ross' critics say he does not have on his resume. Pittman has carried the ball nine times in two games for 75 yards.

"Tony knows what we're doing," Tressel said. "We expect him to be an excellent contributor."

Sooner rather than later, he might have added.
Welll hmmmmmmm....murmurs are growing louder

I thought I was reading sarcasm in '94s post. What is it about a 3-0 team that cries for remedy? How long do we have to watch JT coach before we begin to learn something?

I too believe Pittman has an excellent shot to catch or pass Ross. But I also believe one reason everyone is clamoring for an immediate change is because nobody keeps stats on blocking. The coaching staff sees these guys in practice every day and grades every play from the game tapes. Or maybe JT doesn't want to play Pittman because he is black.

I dont know but the last time I looked, I believe Ross is black also.:) I think your reaching on that one. It simple, and it's been stated before how Tressel favors his seniors and wants them to have their best year. But I agree on one thing with the way Ross has his head down everytime he runs the ball he will never have his best year. Bring on Pittman, he's our future and he is capable of playing right now.

Yes I caught the sarcasm. It just that I know what we as fans see in Pittman as far as his potential, but why don't the coaches see that also. I mean the kid has vision that we havent seen since Clarrett and he is not afraid to put the shoulder down to get a few extra.

If the kid is getting ANY type of PT as a true freshman...I would say the coaches see that potential. There are very few, if any, things the fans will see that the coaches will not.

that's true but I believe his ability to find the hole and hit it with wreckless abandon is far beyond that of Ross's ability to do the same thing. We need a back in there that can take the pressure off JZ and I think Pittman is the answer.

Hmm, difficult decision. Do I trust Jim Tressel or Silverbullet more? Ok, maybe that isn't so difficult. No offense, Silverbullet, but somewhere you have to look at Tressel's accomplishments and decide he knows what he is doing. Personally, knowing that JT has won us a NC, and knowing that he sees both of these RB's everyday in practice, I'm ok with whatever he decides.

How many times in the Cooper era, did we not address glaring problems with run/pass defense, or special teams play, because we were winning? Only to have those problems bite us in the ass, at the end of the year, in 'The Game'.

Winning doesn't mean that there's no room for improvement, and I'm sure that Coach would agree with that. Instead of saying that we can win every game with defense, maybe we should continue to ask the question, why do we have to win with our defense every single game?

I think we need to worry about this a whole heck of a lot more when the Pittman hasn't played very much when he's healthy. The kid got dinged in the second game (Didn't really need him in the frist) and now has had two weeks to get better... and practice more.

(Also, when you're a freshman missing Practice time is much more of an issue, than a senior....).

We need both of these guys, and Branden Joe if we're goign to run the ball well....

Unfortunately- We won't know what the deal is until Wisconsin... I could put 200 on NW.

provided pittman is healthy, which all indications show that he is, i would hope that he gets 1/3 of the total carries, with ross getting about 1/2, hall and joe getting a few, and possibly Haw getting his feet wet.

I think the most telling sign of osu's lack of success in the ground game can come from this statistic:

2002: Clarett 5.6 ypc, Ross 3.7.
2003: Ross 4.3 ypc, very skewed by his game against indiana.

by comparison to find the last time an osu rb's ypc was that low, you have to go back to the days of Vince Workman, which would be some 2 decades ago.

Dont get me wrong, I have alot of faith in Tressel, and I know that Pittman has been dinged up. All, i'm saying with the performance in the spring game and so far this year Pittman has shown a great ability to find the holes and make the most of it. I'm just saying since Pittman is our future I would like to see him more than just mop up work at the end of the game. FKA I had no doubt with as little offense that we produced in the NC State game that tOSU would win. I have had faith in them every game since JT has arrived. I believe he has a system that every other coach in college football would love to have. I was just making a statement that I thought Pittman was a better back than Ross and that I would like to see him play alittle more. After all the more PT he gets the better he will be down the road when Ross has gone.

Just my Opinion. I hope you have one too.
