NBA Attendance Woes

Too many teams, too many games, and HD TVs.

Most NFL fans root for teams. A lot of NBA fans root for players. When that player leaves, the team becomes irrelevant. When the few stars in the league are clumped among a handful of teams, games not involving those teams will only draw diehards.

If I can see half the games on TV on my nice 60" widescreen why do I want to fight traffic, spend $100 or more, and listen to piped in music the entire game?

One of the reasons the NFL is so popular is they only play 16 games. Each city gets 8 home games. In most places, those 8 days are sacred. The same is true of big time college football.

This is the crux of the issue. The NBA loved when LeBron, Bosh, and D-Whistle teamed up in Miami b/c they knew it came with TV Viewership. The problem is, once Miami won the championship, that whole busload of fans tuning into the NBA just to root against the "Heatles" ever winning a championship was gone.

That was a TON of people.

Miami has lost 6 of their last 11 games, have been fighting in the press, and no one even seems to care. Last year it'd be on the front-page of every news site. The NBA lost their luster the second Miami closed the deal last year.

And now you have 3 super-stars stuck in a city where no fans care, no super-stars in the cities they left, and extra empty arena nights because the league has consolidated their super-stars into 5-6 cities.

It's part of the reason I could see LeBron potentially ending up in Cleveland and a move away from the current model. The NBA loved it for 2 years, but they're about to see some of their worst TV viewership and attendance statistics in years.

Compounding the problem tenfold, it seems fairly obvious to me that the NBA only cares about a certain number of its teams being good in the first place.

All you have to do is look at the Christmas day lineup to see who those teams are.

The NBA's desire to have two good teams in LA was also made hilariously transparent by the Chris Paul trade fiasco.

So the question then becomes: which came first? The star players joining the favored teams or the NBA favoring the teams that the star players all went to?

Based on the Chris Paul trade it seems clear that the league actively manipulates team's rosters at least to some extent.

Regardless, the league is an absolute joke in my view. But hey, there are two good teams in LA now!1!!

I fall into this category. I've watched one NBA game in the last three seasons...the game where Dallas eliminated them. I used to check the standings and read the articles when the cHeat were in a funk looking for a shot of schadenfreude. Once they got those rings last year, I ceased giving a [Mark May]. I couldn't tell you a damn thing about this year other than the early season Lakers fiasco. And that's only because it was inescapable in the news. I don't know who's doing well, who's doing poorly. No idea how any of the big rookies are doing. No idea how LeBrick and the cHeat are doing.

That league is pro wrasslin' with a ball and more tattoos as far as I'm concerned.

Absolutely spot on. This is also why I am a conspiracy theorist regarding officiating in the playoffs. The teams that the league wants to win seem to get all the calls.

I'll tell you why I don't watch it anymore...the product sucks.

Its a bunch of tattooed thugs who's lack of offensive skill is astounding.
I saw a score the other night, Atlanta iirc, didn't break 60! 80 point brick fests aren't uncommon at all. They just jack up 3's and pose all fucking game long.

Exactly.

I'll tell you another reason people avoid the arena...it's an assault on the senses. Flashing scoreboards and non-stop crap music blaring all game long. I went to a Nuggets game back in (IIRC) 2009, and you could hardly pay attention to the game with all the other shit going on. It's a lousy experience.

I had lost interest in NBA basketball about 15 years ago. Now I have an 11-year-old son who loves basketball, so I watch it again. At this point, it's hard for me to tell how much of my dislike for the NBA has to do with me growing old versus the product changing.

That said, I went to my first NBA game last week. I went to see the grizzlies played the spurs, (Conley was fantastic) and really enjoyed it. But it IS pretty pricy so it's hard for me to justify going to dozens of games.

I do think the change from Showtime basketball to Pistons/Knicks basketball where defense just abused offense was hard to stomach. Meanwhile, the mid range game has really suffered. You either see dunks or three-point shots, very little in the middle and I think that might contribute to the problems.

nobody wants to pay $50 a ticket for cheap seats to watch the WWE on hardwood.

it will be woefully evident this year in a few specific cases:

first, provided they don't implode first, if the lakers are in contention to sneak into the playoffs come march, any team on their schedule the last 4 weeks might as well prepare their cornholes.

second, i'd wager a large sum of cash that there is no way that the ECF isn't the Heat vs. the Knicks. Dwayne Wade will be permitted to dislocate as many opponents' elbows as necessary to offset his diminishing skills.
