Kicking team has the option of a kickoff or punt. Usually they choose punt because coverage is typically better.

Maybe 10 yards further, but with a much lower trajectory. If the average KO goes to the 5, that's a 65 yard kick. The average punt maybe 45, but with no pressure and not being 10-15 yards behind the line, I'd say the difference in distance isn't too bad.
