National Signing Day Discussion Thread

Looks like someone has finally landed in LA who can go after USC. Sad moment for the rest of the PAC 12. Phil can throw money and kid-crazy uniforms into the Oregon program, but Salem is the sticks and rainy season starts in lat October and runs through April. Winning an NC might have put off the inevitable, but the pull of LA is too strong and even Cal and Stanford aren't really able to fight back for a sustained run.

Pac 12 is getting stronger. B1G is getting stronger. SEC is still very strong.

ACC and Big XII meanwhile...

Not to mention that Mark Helfrich is no Chip Kelly.

Orugun's 15 minutes of fame ran over, but it's about done now.

Before I lose train of thought:

1) Urban has such cohesion with this staff and a complete pulse on what is happening. For all the "we weren't sure in the last hour" comment you get, you can also see in his eyes that he believed he would get them all. To that point...he even pointed out missing Gustin! A champion identifies chances missed and resents it...but the true champion uses that resentment as fuel to never have it happen again. Urban hates losing at checkers and that permeates through the program. I freaking love it.

2) Smith: You are a great coach obviously, but cool off on the gum. I just pine to hear what you say, but the Wrigley's thwarts me. Would have liked to hear more on Stump and Hill...I think these guys are going to both be outstanding players here and complement this class extraordinarily.

3) Coombs is just another relentless guy that hates losing in anything. You can tell the last few years have worn him down physically but he just will not stop...complete grinder. I will take him into war every day. He is going to be a ringer in Cbus for awhile and also a motivator. He knows when there is a battle and he knows when it it is actually won...at the end of the four-letter-word finish line (I am in the recruiting forum and will recognize). No "snow days" here...on to the next town. Not only does he embrace the grind, but he loves it...compares recruiting battles to actual battles...love it.

4) Stan Drayton: Best mindset I have heard, especially for recruiting. You want to be in the NFL? Well, come compete for carries here just like you will have to when money is on the line.

5) Ash: Got us KJ and knows the game.

J.J. Watt sums up Signing Day with one perfect tweet

Nobody understands the pitfalls of thinking "you've made it" more than J.J. Watt.

Watt's work ethic has propelled him from a tight end at Central Michigan to walking on at the University of Wisconsin and eventually becoming a first-round pick.

This past season, Watt was named the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year.

The Houston Texans defensive end offered up a humbling reminder to every big-time high school football player putting ink to paper on Signing Day.

Annual reminder that it's not all about how many stars you have or how many cameras show up at your signing. It's what you do next.

Probably the most intelligent thing said relating to signing day.

I loved this tweet, though I was as guilty as anyone for following Signing Day religiously. But I hope these kids know once they step foot on campus, none of the hostesses, free steak dinners, and stories of immediate playing time matter. Playing time will now have to be earned in practice, and guys that have already been in the program and adapted to college life are your competition, and you're no longer the biggest(unless you're Kevin Feder), strongest and fastest player. It reminds of the scene from The Program when Darnell Jefferson get to ESU on his first day and gets off the bus and it's only Joe Kane and the O line to greet him and he's expecting the cheerleaders, a band and the coaching staff, the O lineman just says to him, "you're just another work $#!t freshman".

The LA schools killed it, as should be expected when they're living in one of the most fertile recruiting grounds, we all should've known that the right coach could right the USc ship. What I'm so surprised about is that Cal and Stanford can't be more competitive. NorCal has a lot of talent in its own right, and many of those kids now leave for Oregon, south to LA or OOC. Oregon will still beat the bums in the PAC 12 North as they have little competition. In the south, the LA and AZ schools will have some big battles. RichRod has done some big things at UA

Things I never thought I'd see in my lifetime...Snoop in a UCLA jersey:

http://www.scout.com/college/ucla/story/1574224-alert-cordell-broadus-quits-ucla-football

Cordell Broadus, the son of rapper Snoop Dogg, has decided to hang up his football cleats, according to sources.

Broadus, who was a four-star receiver prospect from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman and would have been an incoming freshman, hadn’t reported to UCLA’s fall camp in San Bernardino, which started Monday. According to sources, he hadn’t contacted UCLA since camp started.

He is admitted to UCLA, and attended UCLA’s summer session, so he’ll be able to remain enrolled and attend UCLA.

According to sources close to the situation, it was more than likely a matter of Broadus "wanting to do his own thing," since his father had always pushed him to play football.

This is not really surprising. If anyone watched the doc on ESPN, it was plainly apparent his heart wasn't in it. All his answers were "we" and "our," and never indicated what HE wanted. Heck, the show was even titled "A Dad's Dream."

Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dogg's son, quits UCLA football for film school

broadus.vadapt.955.high.0.jpg

“Cordell informed me yesterday that he has decided to pursue other passions in his life -- in particular his love of film through his company Film School Productions,” Bruins head coach Jim Mora said in a statement. “Cordell is an amazing young man with many talents, and we wish him nothing but the best as he continues to pursue his degree at UCLA.”

Snoop, who has always been a huge USC supporter, said back in February that he was throwing out all of his USC underwear now that his son was set to play for Jim Mora and the Bruins. I wonder how he feels about that decision now.

I can't picture Snoop Dogg ever wearing a pair of these:
