I'd take Billups over Nash. I'm sure the Pistons would too. You see, one knows how to play defense - and he does it exceptionally well.

For that team, I would say Billups, but if I am starting a team and can take any pg, I am going with Nash.

Billups is very good, don't get me wrong, but I don't see him as the same palyer with out the other 4 all-stars around him.

Look at what he did b4 Detroit. He was not the player he is now. I know he has improved and would start on about ever team in the league, besides over Nash.

Well, my problem is that I'd want to win a championship. Steve Nash, for all of his offensive abilities and accomplishments, has never and probably will never make the NBA Finals.

Plus, looking at the head-to-head matchup, I think Billups could frustrate Nash, while at the same time torching him for 20 and 10, with the game-winning shot of course.

Put Nash on the Pistons team and they win the championship. Billups and Nash are both very good, but Billups has the much better team around him.

I think there is a chance we could see this matchup in the finals.

Nash is now one of only two point gaurds to ever win the MVP twice(or is it back to back? hell maybe both)....the other was Magic Johnson. Not bad company

Good observation.

Anyway, forget about him being white, and forget about whether or not you'd rather have him than Billups. The award (and this seems to come up every single year, in every single sport) is MVP, which stands for Most Valuable Player. Not Most Whitest Player, not Most Bestest Player on the Bestest Team. Most Valuable. By those standards, guys like LeBron and Kobe are viable, whereas Dirk is slightly less so. I think it would be fair to say that all three of those guys (Nash, James and Bryant) are roughly equal in their indispensability to their respective teams, and since the Suns entered the playoffs with the best record and highest seeding, well...cut and dry, if you ask me. I would have loved to see LeBron get it so young, and it would not have been undeserved, but he's got his whole career ahead of him. 31/7/6 is very likely not the best he can do. Kobe had a prolific year, but the perception that he didn't necessarily make his teammates better is really what did him in. Billups is sensational, and one of the best leaders in the NBA, but if he were to go down with an injury, the Pistons would still be the best team in the Eastern Conference. Dirk too is dominant offensively, but his defensive shortcomings are even more glaring than Steve's, and there's more talent on that Mavs squad (not including Coach of the Year Avery Johnson) than people give them credit for. Thinking about how big the discrepancy would be in the wins column for teams, were they forced to go without their main man, I would have to rank it as such:

Nash
LeBron
Dirk
Kobe
Billups

I'd say Duncan, Kirilenko and Chris Paul should at least be part of the discussion as well, but Duncan's in the same spot as Billups, and unfortunately for the latter two, players on losing teams don't and won't get a whiff.

VR don't forget Brand.
I would have voted...

1.Nash
2.Brand (wouldn't expect him to get 2nd, but i'm a big fan and disappointed by his little attention given)
3.Lebron
4.Kobe
5.Billups

Nash deserves the MVP with those numbers; or at least to not be insulted for winning it.
Also for the debate I would start Nash everywhere but Detroit. Although I'd rather start Nash for Detroit before I'd start Billups for the Suns.

And that really is the reason he won. No way he deserved that award over Dirk, Lebron or Kobe.

And before you say, the writers think of Dirk as a Euro, not as white. Steve Nash gets a pass because most people don't even know he's Canadian - or at least don't acknowledge it.
actually steve nash is an african american. he was born in south africa...

I love billups, and would take him before nash on the pistons. That being said they have an incredible starting 5, plus very solid role players off of the bench.

I've always found the 'but he doesn't win titles' argument to be off-base quite often. As said, swap Nash for Billups and they are still the best team in the league. Kobe seems to be even better than when he was winning titles with Shaq (I don't think the mentality has changed, he just has more freedom to be a ball hog), yet with a poor supporting cast he has to eek his way into the playoffs.
