NASCAR Poll: Is it a sport?

Is NASCAR a sport?

I would consider NASCAR a sport solely based on going 200 MPH and risking a fiery death in a multiple flip crash. Pretty much anything that takes years of training to perfect, nerves of steel, and teamwork, I would consider a sport.

If anyone in here could actually race in a NASCAR Car on a NASCAR track with at least 42 other cars on that track, they would consider it a sport.

Disclaimer: In no way am I saying that I watch cars go in a loop for four hours, but I do appreciate the skill sets needed to perform at a high level and succeed in this area.

As for the notion that ordinary people can play golf at a high level:

Lots of folks play basketball, football, baseball, softball at a "pretty high skill level" too.

The pro level of major sports is a matter of less than 1% of the population. Out of that population only a micro faction can step out of their own sport and compete at the same, or near same level in another pro sport. Dieon Sanders was good enough to start for the Reds, but nowhere near the athlete he was in football. Michael Jordan never got past a tryout level with the White Sox and never made the tour as a golfer. Johnny Bench quickly gave up the idea that he'd make the tour. Bo Jackson remains the only athlete I can remember that could play two sports at the same high level as to be a star in each.

Agree with the comment about Bo Jackson. Still the single greatest athlete in my lifetime and probably won't be surpassed while I'm still kicking.

As far as the bolded section goes I just wanted to add that I know for a fact, first hand with my own two eyes that not only aren't they good enough to make the tour, they aren't/weren't even better than other guys on the celebrity circut. JB could hit a golf ball a country mile, MJ isn't even a scratch golfer. His PGA "flirtation" was more media hype than reality. FWIW, Lawrence Taylor is a better golfer than MJ.

Ok, so now we add combat and test pilot to the discussion. How about twirling the flaming baton and juggling chainsaws?

Combat and Test pilot would probably be more along the lines of occupation :roll1:

But Plane Racing, yeah I would add that. (Observe the emboldened I, meaning personal preferences; not a BP standard) Considering most likely none of us on here could even fly a plane, let alone race a modified jet or even turn a wrench for the correct parts on one (teamwork), I can appreciate the skill sets and ability, let alone balls, to do that.

Twirling a Flaming Baton, hell I'd like to see any on here do that succesfully, I know I can't. But that's more along the lines of entertainment, and that's where it gets blurred. Sports are entertainment. If juggling chainsaws and flaming batons has a tournament, I could possibly consider it a sport, at least along the lines of a competitive stand point. I could at least exercise the thought and not strictly adhere to a pre-formed notion of what a "Sport" would be. There are "traditional" sports; Soccer, Rugby, Field Hockey, Golf, Baseball, Football, Hockey etc. and then "non-traditional" sports Skateboarding, Snowboarding, Motorcross, Wakeboarding, NASCAR, what have you; but I consider them all to be sports.

And I really don't care what anyone else would consider sports, it's all relative anyway.

yes, Nascar is a sport, you actually do have to be in shape to be able to race week in and week out. Those drivers are constantly pulling 3 G's (with the possibility of 64 G's during a crash) every time they make a turn..

also the definition of a sport is an " activity" that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively."
