NASCAR (Official Thread)

When they talked to that panel after the previous wreck.. with 5 laps to go

The ex driver, Rusty Wallace? prophesied "there will be another major wreck in this race"

that's how it is every Daytona/Dega race...If there's a wreck near the end that causes them to really get together for the last 2 laps, almost a grantee there's a wreck

I mean, something really needs to be done with these 2 tracks, drivers do NOT like racing here, non race fans prob don't remember, but the Daytona 500 (back in 2001) is the race that the great Dale Earnhardt lost his life

I've been to most of the tracks... and way too many races.. from my recollections, drivers liked Daytona... their dislike came from the track heat and what it did to the engines and tires

When we were testing compounds and tread designs Daytona and Indy were common sites

The track most disliked was Michigan.. the track destroyed tires... just ate them... I remember one year, the race came dangerously close to being black flagged because everyone was out of tires.. years earlier the drivers insisted on a very very soft sidewall which would literally slingshot the cars.. it was awesome on the test tracks.. our engineers begged them NOT to use it at Michigan .. track had so many ruts, holes and debris, the sidewalls could not hold up... and they didn't.. they strong armed us and it was a disaster.. they backed off and we were able to bring a tire with a stronger sidewall.. we told them it will cut 10-15 mph off the slingshot version but you'll live.. they bitched and moaned...

Goodyear can make a tire to do absolutely ANYTHING... and these mechanics can make a car do absolutely ANYTHING... but somewhere along the road, driver and mechanic common sense has to prevail... the major crashes yesterday had nothing to do with technology or the track.. they were all driver induced

Saw a good question in one of the Deadspin comments: Is NASCAR like MLB and if you catch an engine or tire in the stands do you get to keep it, like a baseball? Or is it like the NBA where you have to give the basketball back?

Completely different scenerios here. And not once has the track been the issue.

The big crash in the Nationwide was due to the restart so close to the end and everyone was so tightly packed, jockeying for position.

Dale Earnhardt killed himself, blocking for his son and Michael Waltrip (who drove for him). What Earnhardt did would have gotten anyone else suspended and fined, but because it was O Holy Earnhardt, it was ok to do and just a tragic outcome. Earnhardt was the worst when it came to the "rubbing is racing" mentality. If he was initiating the contact, he was "racing". If anyone bumped him, he screamed like a bitch about it. Glad he's gone. I'm not sorry about that.

Restrictor plates have been the root cause of almost every "big one" at a super speedway. When Elliot topped 212mph at Talladega, NASCAR got scared those speeds were too much and decided for safety reasons to slow down the cars. It took the advantage of having a better car away from the teams who could build better cars, packed them all together at 190mph and we get these big wrecks.

Its not the tracks, its the restrictor plate.
