My personal three-year rule . . .

Jagdaddy

Head Coach
I have a personal three-year rule when it comes to rooting for the Buckeyes, and to a much lesser extent the pro teams that I much more casually favor. The rule says that reaching the top of the mountain (i.e., winning a national championship) buys the coaches three-years of bitching-free fandom from me. That's not to say that I might not cuss in the middle of a game or express concern that Tim Beck might not be Tom Herman-caliber, but I'm generally going to assume that the coaches know what they're doing and that the players are talented, are working hard to develop that talent, and are putting it all on the line out there. I've taken that approach in part because it's fair to the coaches and players that I profess to root for, but also for the selfish reason that I want to enjoy watching the games and celebrating even the ugly wins during this golden age of Ohio State football rather than being irritated because I'm terrified that some sloppy execution against Hawaii or the MAC means that Sparty or, God forbid, the Harbraugh or some SEC team, will break off a plunger in the Buckeyes down the road. Nothing in the track record of Urban Meyer or Ed Warinner suggests to me that the Buckeyes' current offensive rough patch is likely to last very long, and if my optimism and trust proves to be misplaced then I'll take the comeuppance of being proved wrong by a loss on the field when it comes rather than pre-punishing myself worrying about it before it does.

Interesting philosophy. Let me see if I can use it for some non-Buckeye fandom.

I have been a Reds fan since I was about 10 years old so call it 35 years.

They have been worth more than a used butt plug say maybe 5 times in that span.

So, check my math here, they could win the next 10 World Series in a row and we'd be even?

You poor soul, too bad you are not a few years older.

I got to watch a machine that in and around the infield featured four Hall of Famers (Morgan, Perez, Bench and for a year or two Seaver) plus the best player ever to be excluded from any Hall of Fame. The Reds get a lifetime pass from me.

And not to go even further OT, but do you actually have a used butt plug? The NB and I are trying to find one on the cheap.

Very well said. The bizarro Cleveland fan attitude is exactly what is called for.

To be fair, Cleveland hasn't won anything in my lifetime (39 years). Not to get off-topic, but the closest they've come in that time - the only time they've ever been WINNING in a finals - was this year when the Cavs were up 2-1 on Golden State. The original post was about how he's not allowed to complain for 3 years after his team won.

But you're right - Cleveland fans (including myself, unfortunately) like to complain a lot. Ha - I was in the stands one game and they're losing by a bunch years ago, and they threw an incompletion or an interception or something, and this old guy sitting in front of me said (verbatim), "I said RUN the ball!" This coot thought he had a direct line to the coach, or something, or they could otherwise hear what HE had to say. People are funny.

I'm also a Cleveland fan, and living in Boston for the past decade hasn't made it easy. I suppose thirty years of watching spineless Browns football, terrible front offices, and a handful of close calls from the Cavs and Indians have utterly warped my sports psyche. In the case of Cleveland sports, I tend to always expect the worst because -- as you know to well -- that's all we've ever seen!

Sometimes I have to take a step back and remember the vortex of suck containing the Browns has no effect on Ohio State. My comments were made in that spirit.

Two words....

JOSE. MESA.

After that blown 9th inning I was sent to my room for excessively crying and screaming at the TV... I mean I was like 12 years old so there is that excuse. If that happened today I'd like to think It'd be a different response, but ya know I'm not so sure it would be.

The 1990 sweep of the As gives the reds a lifetime pass for me cause i was in elementry school and one of my best friends was a huge As fan so i got bigtime smack talk over him. Also they've been so bad since that i never really buy in. If they tease me with competence I'll get a bit optimistic, but for the most part the reds are a mild divirsion to get me to ghe start of cfb. I generally don't even know their record or how far back they are. Each game/series is a one off and if they lose no big deal.
