those "heavy lines" were awesome
As for FB and the T formation, When Ferguson was the lead runner the two halfbacks either blocked or were decoys. Never once saw a 1 back or empty backfield set. Example: QB takes the snap, RHB goes through the 6 hole and looks for the linebacker or a corner to block, FB gets the ball and follows the HB. Or QB gets the ball, fakes to the FB heading for the 6 hole and pitches to the HB who's swinging out for an end run. Worked estremely well when the FB was someone like Ferguson, who was never thrown for a loss in three years of starting, and the HB was Warfield, who had Ginn level speed. Worked even better when Warfield had matured and no longer lost footing when trying to cut and could also catch the ball.
In truth, Woody's choice for RB depended upon talent. When it was Ferguson, Matt Snell (vastly underrated IMO) or Bob White at FB, his running back was his full back. When the runner was Cassedy, Roseboro, Clark, or Archie it was his HB or I back. When it was Ferguson and Warfield or Ferguson and Matte, the defense had to be ready to stop either, same with Johnson and Archie, Otis and Kern or Otis and Leo Hayden. Oh, and John Brockington deserves some cred here too for all purpose back and a solid career with the Packers.
