  • start rant

it started sunday night around 9pm, i got an email from my boss that our datacenter was 90 degrees, and things were starting to act funny, so he was going to let some fans run all night and i told him that i would be there by 7am, since i live an hour away there was no way i was going in last night....

i get to work this morning at 700am, my phone looks funny. i go into our datacenter and find that our phone server has taken a nice steaming shit! Our company gets approximately 1100 calls per day so our phones being out is a HUGE deal. start diagnosing the problem and find out that the OS has gotten all fuckered up, and our last good backup was..... 3 weeks ago! (fucking backup admins!) so, we spent 2 hrs reinstalling the OS, and now its up, however the 3rd drive in the raid array is starting to flake out, so we've been copying data off, including 45GB of recorded calls, transferring across the network - that still has another hour to run approximately. once its up we have 3 spares that we are going to put in place, then recopy data back...

oh least i forget, during all of this our email server crashed. we have a simple raid array inside the server with just the os, and all of the database information (mailstore, ect) is on an external raid array box, and now the two devices dont want to communicate! we just replaced the scsi controllers in the external device as well as replaced the back plane. we have a guy now running to get a scsi card for the actual server.... its 8pm as i'm writing this and i dont know when i'll be getting home....

    end rant

Now how can you know how to fix all that stuff and not know it's "you're" not "your"?

Just playing the part of the spelling nazi and trying to lighten your day.

I was gonna say that but was a bit concerned that it might make his day worse.... you just dropped it right there, for everyone to see...

Smile, IAB, it could be worse

No A/C or climate control in the data center room? That seems odd. I don't know what kind of company you work for (small?) but I would think some kind of climate control would be an absolute must.

Got my fingers crossed for you!

well, see thats why the building mgr is going to be shot. we have a hvac system that was supposed to be kicking on at 74 degrees, but it wasn't kicking on until 80 degrees, we finally got them to "correct" this, but the jackbag shit for brains (possible scum grad - thats not confirmed yet) changed it to kick on ac at 94 instead of 74 like we asked. (he made that change saturday am).

its ok, the only part that really bums me out is i wont get to see my daughter before she goes to bed, and i didn't get to see her this morning either, so that sucks ass. i'm usually the one to get to play with her everynight, and when i know i'm not going to get to, it really makes the day suck ass.

Go home, get her out of bed, but don't wake her...sit in a dark room, in a rocking chair and rock her... it is wonderfully rejuvinating after a hellish day.. trust me!

Our IT manager was just fired after a water main break flooded our basement and destroyed our IT department and servers, and it was discovered that our most recent backup was in January! Our books division lost 8 months worth of data. Needless to say, my job this past month has been recreating the missing data. Not fun!
