I can't give you enough rep for this thread, GREAT IDEA. In fact, Godfather What If's could be a thread of their own.

IMO - the downfall of the Corleone family wasn't Kay and Michael's 2nd son being aborted, it was the move to Tahoe.

Understood that Michael wanted to switch the families revenue stream to be 100% legitimate gambling (hence the move on Moe Green at the conclusion of Part 1) - but he left his zone of familiarity and influence when he moved the family out West. The family could have still operated with gambling as their revenue, made a move for Cuba, and let Clemenza have his own family without moving West.

I don't mind the move to Tahoe, except the Mike lost track of the trees for the forest. No way would Part I Mike wouldn't have noticed Fredo making back-door power grabs with Roth. Tahoe Mike was out of control and (as is obviously emphasized) lost track of his family. That was his demise. That's why I still hate the Apollonia death. She had Mama Coreleone written all over her, and she would have put Michael back in his place, unlike passive-aggressive wimpy-ass Kay. I really hate Kay.

Anyways, back to the point, I think the Tahoe move could have been negotiated, had Michael not lost track of the 'important things'
The third movie could have featured much less of Sophia Coppola or not included her at all... her and that bitch-ass ungrateful brother of hers...
I do not know of this "third movie" of which you speak.

How big of a role did Connie's demise have in Michael losing control? After Michael had Carlo killed in Part 1, Connie pretty much lost her mind.

If you killed everyone except Carlo at the conclusion of Part 1 - would Michael have been different? Does a stable Connie help him out or is her unstability assumed based on the fact that if you keep Carlo alive, he's going to continue to beat on her.

Carlo had to die.

Nobody with balls allows a man to beat on his sister.
Especially when that same piece of shit arranges to have your brother killed.

Especially if family is as important to you as it is to Sicilians.

Michael would have lost all credibility as a Don (IMO) if he allowed Carlo to live after such transgressions.

They killed Paulie for less than that.

What if Somerset (Freeman) had killed "John Doe" to protect Mill's (Pitt) career? He was going to retire anyway.

Actually according to the DVD, this was considered as an ending by Fincher but decided against it. Movie is better the way it was, but this alternate ending is plausible.
