Mount Union (OH) Purple Raiders (13-time D-III National Champions)

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Congrats to Coach Kehres and the Purple Raiders on being what I believe are the greatest "dynasty" in the history of College athletics. Think about it, their first regular season loss since 1994. THAT is downright sick. Now pick it back up and win the NC.

The fact that these guys don't get schollies to play at DIII speaks volumes for the coaching staff. The fact that it was another Ohio school (my Sister's Alma Mater) makes it pretty sweet too. Now all that Mount Union has to do to impress me is follow it up with another 110 regular season wins.

As for the "dynasty" comment. I couldn't agree more. I've only seen them play when they were on television, but their run is more impressive, to me, than any I've ever seen before.

Mount Union is one of my few claims to fame, so I thought I'd weigh in on this thread. I was a backup ILB there in 94 and 95 - I was in uniform for the last regular season loss in 94 to Baldwin Wallace. That was the year after the Purple Raiders won their first national title in 93, my freshman class started with over 80 guys. My high school team was particularly bad my junior and senior years, and when I went up there to see what Alliance was all about, I saw them kick Hiram's butt to the tune of 65-6 or some similar ridiculous score. I remember watching the title game on ESPN in 93, Rowan was no match for MUC that day. Basically, Mount gets most of their talent from NE Ohio - the guys that don't get MAC scholarship offers and want to be part of a winner go there. They also get some D-I transfers, I believe there was an OL from OSU that did so a few years back. Anyone who sticks it out through the practices gets to dress out for the home games, I imagine as the away team it's quite a sight to see that many players on the other sideline. I ended up transfering to OSU in 96, which was the first of three titles in a row for Mount. A lot of the guys that came in with my class were four-year starters, including the QB Bill Borchert who came in as option QB in HS and started from game one our freshman year. I think he ended up breaking a lot of the passing records there, only to have his bested by Smeck from Lancaster.

As some of you know, I played at ONU and I'm proud to see this. MU is many a D3 player's claim to fame and represents "the bar" in every D3 v. D2 or D1AA argument. The amazing part of MU's streak is that it was in the OAC. The OAC is the Big Ten of D3 football back when OSU/Michigan were the only two programs in the country fighting it out every year for the National Championship. The unfortunate issue with the OAC is that between MU, BW, JC, ONU and Capital there are 5 to 7 teams that would win almost any other conference in the country. At any rate, it's good to see this and hopefully it's representative of a new "man" in town. I highly doubt it, though. For you former Polar Bears, if you haven't seen it the new stadium in Ada is beautiful- wish I could have played in that one. I was stuck in the dumpy Ada War Memorial. :lol: Memories.
