Mount Union (OH) Purple Raiders (13-time D-III National Champions)

Could be headed for Mary Hardin-Baylor vs Mount for the 3rd straight year, and a rubber match.

MHB will take on St. John's (Minnesota) in one semi while Mount faces Muhlenberg (never heard of them) in the other.
I never heard of Mary Hardin-Baylor. I will have to ask my retired Big Red VP neighbor about these two schools.

Mount Union football to face first-time opponent in quarterfinals
Posted Nov 25, 2018 at 5:04 PM

The top-ranked Purple Raiders play at home Saturday.

A new opponent awaits the No. 1-ranked University of Mount Union football team Saturday. The Purple Raiders host No. 22 Mulhenberg in the national quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA Division III playoffs at noon, Saturday, at Mount Union Stadium.

This is the first meeting between the schools.

The Purple Raiders are 12-0. They defeated Denison 60-0 in the first round and Centre (Ky.) 51-35 in the second round, and have college football’s longest win streak at 27 games.

Mount Union is in its 30th tournament appearance and has an 101-16 record in NCAA playoff games and the Raiders have advanced to the Stagg Bowl 20 times since 1993 with a record 13 national championships.

Muhlenberg, located in Allentown, Pa., is 11-1. The Mules won a first-round game at Delaware Valley (Pa.) 20-13 then defeated Randolph-Macon (Va.) 35-6 at home in Round 2.

The Mules are making their eighth playoff appearance (first since 2014), and have a 4-7 record in playoff games.

Muhlenberg is one of five national at-large selections to this year’s tournament after placing second in the Centennial Conference. It is Muhlenberg’s first appearance in the round of eight and its only loss this season is to Johns Hopkins — also in the quarterfinals.

The game will be broadcast live on the radio on 1310AM WDPN and WRMU 91.1 FM and a live video stream will be available online.

The winner of this game advances to the national semifinals against either Johns Hopkins or R.P.I. on Dec. 8.

Just realized I only saw the top part of the bracket.

I see Mount's old friends from Wisconsin-Whitewater are back in the playoffs, and also in the quarterfinals. The only way they'd meet for the umpteenth time would be in the championship game. I wouldn't bet against it.

Sometimes it seems like tOSU fans are spoiled and we often act like it. But, Mount fans...

My in laws are season ticket holders, go the Stagg bowl whenever MU plays, father in law knows every coach and player on the roster etc. So, Saturday afternoon, my mother in law texts us that "Mount is about to lose; they're playing so terrible". So I check the score, surprised the Raiders could be losing. Score was 24-7 in the 3rd quarter... Mount winning. It's not easy getting to the top but it can be harder to stay there lol.

Would be 10th matchup in last 14 D-III championships. Mount Union has missed championship game 5 times since 93. I feel like I could field a team of high school baseball players in a local U10 girls softball league and be less successful that that.

No surprise that Mary Hardin-Baylor and Wisconsin-Whitewater both won, and will meet in the semifinals. If Mount gets by Hopkins they'll either play MHB for the 3rd year in a row or WW for the 10th time.

Mount will take on Mary Hardin Baylor for the third year in a row in the Stagg Bowl. They've split the first two, and both teams are 14-0 this season.

The game will be played in Shenandoah, TX, about 2 hours from MHB's campus (next year's SB is there too). The 2020 and 2021 Stagg's will be played in Canton, OH, which would be great for Mount.
