SC mom charged with killing kids before car sinks

By MEG KINNARD, Associated Press Writer Meg Kinnard, Associated Press Writer ? 14 mins ago
ORANGEBURG, S.C. ? A South Carolina mother who claimed her children drowned when their car careened into a river was charged with murder Tuesday after authorities said she confessed to suffocating the two toddlers to be free of them and then faking the accident.
Shaquan Duley, 29, told investigators she was distraught about money troubles and unemployment, said Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams. He said Duley told them she killed the boys ? 2-year-old Devean C. Duley and 18-month-old Ja'van T. Duley ? with her hands after arguing with her own mother about how she was raising the children.
"She truly felt, if I don't have these toddlers, I can be free," Williams said at a news conference.
Officials said they were unable to locate the children's father, who did not live with the family. Duley has another child, a 5-year-old girl, who was now with the grandmother.
The state agency responsible for child welfare in South Carolina said it has had no involvement with Duley.
The Highway Patrol was notified around 6:15 a.m. Monday that a woman needed help getting her children out of a car. Duley, who did not have a cell phone, had walked some distance down the country road by the boat landing and flagged down a passing motorist to call the Highway Patrol.
Later that morning, authorities pulled Duley's Chrysler sedan from the North Edisto River in Orangeburg, some 35 miles south of Columbia, the state capital. The two boys were still strapped into their car seats.
Duley said she'd had an accident and walked to get help. But almost immediately, Williams says authorities became suspicious of the young mother's story. There were no skid marks on the roads leading to the water, and no obvious signs of a crash.
"We felt that the story she was telling us wasn't factual," Williams said.

If you've ever been to Orangeburg, this is much more understandable. Terrible. Anyway, that being said, yeah...she's going to a VERY bad place. Most people (and I mean in the neighborhood of 90%) should never reproduce.

not even something to joke about, katt.

some sick people out there. Makes me cherish the fact I can stay home with mine right now. Makes me want to go hug them.

Great point. Nothing to joke about...unless there was a fiery crash before the car went into the water.

Sat through a trial where the young mom killed her two young sons by dropping them into the Columbia River from a bridge. It was one of the most fascinating trials I have ever witnessed. It became abundantly clear - despite the press accounts of the trial and the public outrage - that the woman was a good loving mom who wanted the best for her kids but who was mentally unstable. A convert to the LDS, she tried to give up her kids, asking the church to take them (she thought she was an evil person and so was her husband). The church elders just told her to buck up and try harder. She had been taught by the LDS that kids who die before the age of nine or ten - I forget which - go to the highest of the many levels of heaven. As she loved her kids, and as living with her and her scum bag husband would taint them, she decided to send them to the highest level of heaven out of concern for their welfare.

[censored]ed up craziness I know, and not saying that was anything like this case. Just saying I found out in that case that the press is about worthless as far as the accurate reporting of anything, and that even an event that I though could never produce any sympathy for a person turned out to be a sad lecture on mental illness and how a good loving person can do a horrible deed. She turned herself in after she killed them, and asked to be shot. The cops thought she was nuts, and they could not find the body for months. A psychic was consulted by the DA, who "saw" a number and reported the number in the newspaper. A fisherman used to fish at that buoy number - went there - and found the bodies on a sandbar. At trial's end, the jury found her guilty, but held a press conference demanding a change in the law to exempt a person who "knew they did wrong" but were crazy. The law required that a person "know right from wrong - appreciate the nature of the act" - and if they did, a "not guilty by reason of insanity" was off the table . She asked to be killed, so she knew what she did was wrong - she just thought her kids going to the highest level of heaven more important than the civil crime when she was nuts.

The judge sentenced her to a mental hospital in light of that and lost his seat the next election, "soft on baby killers" being the issue at election.

Not a point as it relates to this gal, just reminded me of a memorable case and why I try to wait to read the transcript before I judge a trial by press coverage.

if that woman was right enough in her head to try and give her kids away to the church, she was right enough in the head to just drop them off at city hall or anywhere else in the city where someone could pick them up. Be it a fire/cop station, or what have you. Not off a fucking bridge.
