I think Charles Kettering deserves a nomination. He invented the all-electric starter on automobiles. If it wasn't for him, we would still have to crank start are cars every morning!! (And as one who has crank started a 1939 Model-B John Deere, I realize how great of a luxery the electric starter is!)
