Yeah, but 2002 Iowa was good enough to be #3 in the country before the bowl games. :sneaky:

And that of course was a year where Ferentz won COY over a Buckeye coach, both in the Big Ten and the national AP award.
You have to respect the fact that Kirk has maintained that brand so long that we could be talking about a Hawkeye defense 20 years in either direction.

I'm going JJ Smith.

I don't have any problem with Clarett, I just wonder if he was really that good or the guys behind him were that bad.

The example I used to make was that if we had had a running back as good as Michael Wiley in 2003, we would have won the whole thing. Lydell Ross was truly a generational, maybe all time, player. Just not the good kind. But out of necessity he still got nearly 600 carries in his career and I swear I remember them all.

Mo was really that good

For all of you jumping off the Flydell train, with the exception of one game from Zeke.. one quarter, really... there was NO other back you'd want if you're playing Indiana... Honestly, I remember being pretty pleased when OSU landed Ross. The Florida kids weren't typical OSU recruits at the time. Going national had phases. I guess, to me, he represented something of a growing foothold in a HS hotbed.

I remember being at the UM game in 02. MoC by that point was hurt, with harness. When he trotted out, the stadium and team became electric. Nothing ever like it.

I don't remember Lydell Ross's freshman year stats, but I remember really liking him. And now that I've looked up his stats, I don't know why I liked him. 406 yards in 119 attempts = 3.4 ypa. Oh well.
But after his freshman year, it seemed as though he couldn't get the linemen out of his way. I never played football at any level, but when a running play is called, don't the offensive linemen have blocking assignments that show where the hole is supposed to open? And I get that the defense is trying to fill that hole. But it seemed as though Ross ran into someone EVERY carry. So I felt the offensive line was bad. He's fighting just to get to the LOS.
Clarett didn't seem to have that problem, but Clarett was just awesome.
But then Pittman came in, and he's able to get to the LOS without being hit. Same linemen, but different runner. That was when I decided Ross wasn't as good as I had thought.

In the modern era (2000+, last 25 years) I have MoC number 1 based on the impact he had to that teams championship run. It’s no stretch to say we do not win the title in 2002 without him. Jeremiah Smith has the potential to be the GOAT at his position at tOSU and an NFL HoFer. His impact was immense for the 2024 title season but more probable we win without him than MoC. No question he made our path much easier and so thrilled he’s playing for the S&G!

Ted Ginn would be my 3rd because he was such a threat and game changer his freshman season when we had far less prolific offensive production.

There isn’t anyone else close to those 3 in the modern era. Plenty of honorable mentions where guys were strong rotational players and or came on strong at the end of the season (James L, JSN, Denzel Burke, JK Dobbins, etc.). Those 3 had a huge impact from the very first game of the season which is rare but becoming less so with advanced trading and development in high school.

You should see some highlights of Trent Richardson in the pros. Comedy gold.
