Everybody is assuming Herron will redshirt, but those who have seen him play would argue immediately. Most think Saine will get some carries. Some think Mo Wells will never develop into the back we were hoping he'd be back when he committed, and then there are those who think he will have a great season.

My question then, is this. Who will get more carries? The two frosh combined (or just one if the other gets a RS) or Mo Wells? Assuming Beanie carries the load and we pull away early in some games, someone is going to get some quality carries. Thoughts?

JT always likes to give the elders on the team their shot. Mo Wells by that logic.
JT also likes to play the best hand (as Chris Wells getting more carries last year over Mo Wells). So by that logic - if - Saine shows well in KR game and some 3rd down carries perhaps it all shifts into his column as back #2 by season's end.
Mo Wells early more than Saine.
Saine if the better deal more than Mo in season's second half.

This can't be a serious thread. If you've watched OSU football since Tressel's arrival you'd know that Tressel gives priority to proven, experienced players. While MoWells hasn't turned into the explosive back some thought he would, he's still been a pretty good back and has supposedly made significant gains in weight and strength over the off-season without losing quickness or speed. There's no doubt that MoWells is the clear-cut #2 RB...

Even though I love Mo Wells, I just don't like his chances of success being a small back. Even though there are exceptions, I believe Brandon Saine will have the primary opportunity for the back up position based on if he can pick up the system fast enough. He just possesses too much size and speed to be kept on the sidelines.

Maybe in some other systems, but not under JT.

Mo Wells is the clear-cut #2 RB RIGHT NOW...everyone knows this. My question was insinuating who would get more carries throughout the entire season. Mo Wells has had our hopes up since he's got on campus but still has yet to prove he can hit a hole (aside a run or two) or break a tackle.

What I'm saying is that even though of course JT will give him the first shot, will he get bypassed again like he did last year, find himself 3rd on the depth chart (behind Saine or Herron) and get less carries than the new #2. I don't think this is such a crazy concept. I'm just not sure if backs as small as Mo are going to fit into our system. We'll see. I voted for Mo, but I don't think I'm out of line at all by thinking this could happen.

You got it down pat. Barring injuries Wells gets the carries. He as paid his dues and has the talent and experience. If he has gained some pounds thats even better. JT will give him the chance so he just has to DO it.

If the younger guy is doing a better job, he'll play.

Otherwise Ross & Hall would have kept Clarett on the bench and Beanie wouldn't have been able to get past Maurice last year.

If Maurice can get it done he'll get his carries if he can't or if Saine or Boom are signifigantly better they will. End of story.

IMO, we have too many quality runningbacks to give them all a legitamate amount of carries. IMO the freshman will have to wait for their turn and Beanie and Mo Wells will have to take the carrying load on their shoulders, but mostly Beanie.

Neither Saine nor Herron is the #1 RB coming out of high school, either. Maurice also has another year of experience under his belt and has reduced his fumble-itis. Now maybe Saine or Herron would give a sophomore-to-be MoWells a run for his money, but a junior-to-be MoWells is better prepared to handle to load of being the #2 back.

If Mo got 40 something carries last year as the 3rd back behind Pittman, who was healthy all year and Beanie, who came on very strong at the end, its easy to assume his carries will increase. If we say he gets the same number of carries this season that Beanie got last year as the number 2, not likely, then he should about double to around 90 carries. That means Herron and Saine will have to get 45-50 each to keep up. I'm not seeing that.

MoWells looked terrific in the spring game in my opinion. Yes, its just the spring game but the defenses we played against in that game are better than at least 6 on our schedule, and they were split up. I say Beanie barring injury racks up 120-140 carries. Mo should pull in about 80 more and the freshmen should get around 60 if they both play and not redshirt. Also, don't rule out the fact that Brandon may get some time in the Shot-Ginn or some crazy formation Tressel dreams up to utilize his speed in the passing game.

I guess to answer the actual question. MoWells gets more carries, and deservedly so.
