IMO, we have too many quality runningbacks to give them all a legitamate amount of carries. IMO the freshman will have to wait for their turn and Beanie and Mo Wells will have to take the carrying load on their shoulders, but mostly Beanie.

We don't have too many quality RBs. We only have around 150 career carries between a Junior and a Sophmore. Only Wells has proven he can carry the majority of the load next year with some flashes of brillance but also flashes of fumbling. With OSUs history of having bigger RBs with the exception of using Maurice Hall, and this combined with the lack of experience at the RB position it is definitely not out of the question for Saine/Herron to move into the 2nd RB slot. I really can't think of OSU ever using a scat back in their offense exclusively. We just typically have well rounded backs with good size. With Maurice Wells averaging 3.5 yards a carry for his career so far, that really doesn't solidify him much, hopefully the gained weight will allow him to bring that average up. Also it seemed like K.C. Christian did a pretty good job in the spring game off limited carries.

I have a slight feeling that our scholarship backs will be looked upon before Christian, and that's just a product of hard work by the coaches from recruiting these guys here in the first place. It would take an Iowa-like-year of a couple years ago for Christian to be a factor, would it not? Which brings up the point, you can never tell how many RB's is enough or too many or sometimes not enough. I believe the general rule of thumb would be a pair and a spare, and tOSU seems to have that, which then even allows for a RS for our 4th RB. Don't feel too sorry for us.

If the #2 RB isn't Mo Wells we've either got a future phenom in Scarlet and Gray or we're completely fucked at the RB posistion after Beanie Wells. I'm hoping Mo Wells has progressed in the 3 years he's been here and can fill in when Beanie needs a break. I'd rather have a junior out there than completely unproven guys who were playing HS ball less than a year ago.

I know what you are getting at, but these days man, all that matters is once everyone straps up that uniform, what gives us the best chance to win. Class (status? rank? eligibility?) goes directly out the window at that point, regardless of how much JT likes his seniors. I don't care how much we look like Wisconsin :roll2:. I think our backfield will be fine, no matter how much gloom and doom seems to be going around, and no matter how long ago they had their flippin' senior prom. DOES NOT MATTER.

I went with Saine/Herron. JT wasn't afraid to bench Ross and Hall in favor of MC, so I don't think he'll be afraid to bench the backup Wells in favor of a freshman. There are plenty of other examples of freshmen playing over a more experienced player. Why not at RB?

I got burned by jumping on the Beanie Bandwagon right after the spring game. He didn't show me anything that hinted at his problems holding onto the ball. That makes me reluctant to pick anyone but Beanie this year.

But the running game hinges on other factors: Can Robiskie and Hartwell get open without Ginn and Gonzo to draw off coverage? If not, more work will go to the running backs.

Which O-line shows up, the one that bull dozed the Michigan front 7 all over the field, or the one that acted like they'd never seen a speed rushing DE in Arizona? If you can't pass you better be able to run.

Does Tressel go back to a drop back passer or look to find a "new" Troy in Henton? If he goes with Henton, and I understand that Henton was more the kind of QB he had at YSU, then some of the running game is going to be tied up in the QB and doing a lot of option work in which case a burner like Saine might surprize us.

You were picking beanie over a returning starter. I'm not sure if that compares well to MoWells vs Frosh.

I sure wish they had stuck with the bull dozing for pittman :sad2:

If Mo got 40 something carries last year as the 3rd back behind Pittman, who was healthy all year and Beanie, who came on very strong at the end, its easy to assume his carries will increase. If we say he gets the same number of carries this season that Beanie got last year as the number 2, not likely, then he should about double to around 90 carries. That means Herron and Saine will have to get 45-50 each to keep up. I'm not seeing that.

MoWells looked terrific in the spring game in my opinion. Yes, its just the spring game but the defenses we played against in that game are better than at least 6 on our schedule, and they were split up. I say Beanie barring injury racks up 120-140 carries. Mo should pull in about 80 more and the freshmen should get around 60 if they both play and not redshirt. Also, don't rule out the fact that Brandon may get some time in the Shot-Ginn or some crazy formation Tressel dreams up to utilize his speed in the passing game.

I guess to answer the actual question. MoWells gets more carries, and deservedly so.

Good post, but if Beanie only gets 120-140 carries, I'm going to be not only shocked, but pissed. He better get about 100 more than that!

Erik Haw could have been the #2 this year. Damn!

250 carries is a lot of work for a college Sophomore. Can he handle it? He has the body to but considering the average per carry he had last season, we'll be chalking up a lot of real estate per carry and thus limiting him carries late in the game. Mo Wells will see the bulk of those carries early in the season and in crunch time later on. I would hope at least one of the Freshman can be counted upon to come in and perform when givent he opportunity. I foresee the opportunities to be fairly low though especially early in the season due to their inexperience.
