WBBM 780 - Chicago's #1 source for local news, traffic and weather - Major League Baseball Tells Little Leaguers: We Own Uniform Rights
MLB continues to baffle me. They shutdown free internet radio broadcasts to "protect" their product (make a few bucks off subscriptions), limited their Extra Innings package to Direct TV (shutting out millions of fans), and now this? Hell'uve a way to market to an atrophying fan base and future talent pool by limiting access and free advertising. I'll tell you this, kids weren't buying Toronto Blue Jays hats in Marion, Ohio when I was a kid because they were Lloyd Moseby fans (they played on my little league Blue Jays team). MLB is stupid, stupid, stupid. Of course, teams can still use MLB team names if they buy the more expensive Majestic brand jerseys. After the strike of '95 and the 'roids revelations, you'd think they'd be doing more to raise their image, not suing little leagues for promoting their product. The baseball uniforms for the Tinley Park Bulldogs look a little different this year.
Gone are the names of Major League Baseball teams that accompanied "Bulldogs" on the front of the kids' jerseys.
No White Sox.
No Cubs.
No Phillies, Yankees or Reds.
Why? MLB hurled a fastball at the heads of those who make the uniforms for the little ballplayers: Drop the big-league names or face a lawsuit.
